The Redbox would be a great place to rent Blu-ray's at.

If the did they would have to put it in a "blu box".

There is only so much room in the RedBox. Most people don't have Blu-ray so it's probably not that profitable for them.

From my perspective you have a low customer base still as well as the fact the cost is approximately 40% more expensive than your typical DVD. My guess is they are working off VERY low margins as it is because $1 per day means it would take them over a month just to break even on a DVD. With a Blu-ray it would probably be more than a couple months.
It's just not viable right now. |

I am sure that eventually you will be able to rent Blu-ray movies from a Redbox. But I don't think it will happen this year. Most likely won't be till next year at the earliest.
Redbox only rents out the best selling/renting titles because so many people will want it. If they add Blu-ray, it is not going to rent nearly as well as the DVD version. But when they do, they will have to make sure people know they are watching a Blu-ray and not a DVD. In addition, I fully expect the price to be more to rent a Blu-ray since they cost more. But if/when they do, it will be a good sign that Blu-ray will be in the mainstream. |

If they took out the dvd movies that really no one rents anymore and free up some slots, they could at least stick in several copies of each weeks new releases and cycle them through. I go to the one of the few we have here in Texas (when I can't rent what I want on blu-ray, b/c in Hollywood blu-ray selection is very limited) and the selection is huge, but they are a bunch of movies that no one will rent consistantly.

If they stick ANY Blu-ray titles in them now, it will lead to confusion. People (J6P) will not know what a Blu-ray is or that they can't play it on their DVD player.
Besides, redbox does not have a lot of titles people don't rent anymore. They have such a limited selection of titles and they change them often. Don't expect any Blu-ray movies in the redbox for another year imo. |

I know what Wal-Mart pays per unit and it's the same as what my distributor pays. Everyone pays the same for each DVD. The difference is marketing dollars....that's how Wal-Mart can discount DVD's to $15 or $16 for the first week because they'll use the marketing dollars to discount certain titles. In a lot of cases Wal-Mart or Best Buy will use certain titles as loss leaders. $10 bucks a pop is NEVER going to happen even with marketing dollars. Redbox doesn't order enough product to beat Blockbuster video and you think they'll get a better deal than Wal-Mart? The only way to get a lower cost is to rev share with stuidos. I can tell you right now from personal experience anyone rev sharing with stuidos better lube up. So in essense, Redbox will not be getting Blu-ray for well beyond a year. Unless Blu-ray somehow takes off and prices come down. |

I just tried Red Box twice this weekend. Once for Beowulf, and once for Licence to Wed. Which we watched at my GF house on an SD TV. I love Redbox!
Blockbuster is expenice and Netflix was great when I was watching a lot of movies, but now I'm doing other things so I ended up keeping some of my titles way too long, and quit. I will probibly rejoin one of them for BD but so far I've heard that they are taking forever to ship BDs. What if RedBox BDs were $2? I would pay $2 for rent a BD from RedBox, whouldn't you? It probibly wouldn't cost them twice as much for the movies. |
