Default Resolution setting?

I have a 42" plasma 1080i HDTV and have recently bought a Blu-Ray player. One of the settings on the player is setting the resolution. Should I set it to 1080i like the TV or 1080p? Will setting it at 1080p harm anything in the long run? Or does it matter? I have yet to determine if there's a noticeable difference set beyond the TV's capabilities. Thanks in advance.

According to the PS3, you have to set the resolution to the correct setting or the screen will go blank. If your tv is 1080i, then I strongly recommend you to adjust the settings on your tv and blu-ray player to match each other. If you just have a standalone blu-ray player, it might adjust the resolution automatically without the screen going blank.

I had a feeling the player was just resorting to 1080i regardless. Thanks for info. Lotta great info on this site. Glad I found it.

Not true of most TVs anymore actually... if it can't accept the signal then yes, but most new TVs can down-convert 1080P

I have a Sony 42" 1080i tv and I gave my PS3 set to 1080p and I have not had any problems. The tv I bought new in Jan 06, then got my PS3 in Dec 06.

probably because the PS3 will search the resolutions that you have chosen and which ones your TV will actually do. if you have it set to 480/720/1080i/1080p but your TV only does 1080i that is the resolution it will run in. Just like how it changes resolution with certain games.

Also not true

my friend has a 1080i RPTV (no 720) and he set his PS3 to 480/720/1080i and on a game that was 720 the ps3 went black, so he had to turn off 720 because the PS3 didn't output automatically what his TV could do

yep, thats how my 1080i only TV works...I have to un-select 720p or I would get a black screen.

I have the Hitachi P42T501 42" Plasma. When I bought it I knew it was a 1080i TV. Now when I play Blu-Ray on it set to the before mentioned 1080p, I click the Info button on the TV remote that tells what rez the signal is, it says 1080p. When I looked further into the details of the TV, it claims the three HDMI ports are "1080p compatible". What the heck does that mean...compatible? Sorry for dredging this old thread back up, but didn't feel the need to start another one since it's somewhat related. LOL

I still need to buy my parents a new and better HDTV. Currently they own a 54" Hitachi HDTV Compatible. When comparing mine (32"Sharp Aquos 1080p) and their current one, their tv looks like an ordinary tv set.
