So happy for Room with a View!
this new restoration means it's newer than the one for previous Blurays? Or maybe it's the one that was used in Studio Canal's release? Love the cover too. The title font, not so much. By the way, it seems to be the first BLuray of this movie in the OAR which according to imdb is 1.66:1. ![]() Last edited by filmmusic; 06-16-2015 at 09:21 PM. |

I keep hoping that Criterion will acquire the rights to "Maurice." That being said, "A Room With A View" is a wonderful addition to the Criterion collection. I was thinking about acquiring the out-of-print Warner Bros. release but I can now own what is most assuredly going to be a superior version.

![]() Quote:
I thought this goes by the package, not by individual movie. By the way, hadn't realised that this film was nominated for 8 Oscars (incl. Best Picture), and won 3! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091867/awards?ref_=tt_awd Also, I see the Studio Canal release has both a 5.1 and 2.0 track while Criterion has only the 2.0. Although I'm not sure how much would one benefit from the 5.1. Last edited by filmmusic; 06-16-2015 at 11:19 PM. |

I own this version of Maurice:
![]() [Amazon Link] And the back does say "Produced in association with The Criterion Collection" (as do the other DVDs in The Merchant-Ivory Collection) but I don't know what that means in the larger context of film rights. Howards End was released under the same banner, too, and that eventually got a separate Criterion release, so I really don't know. ![]() |

Someone over on another forum said this title was part of the package they acquired from Westchester Films. So it may not mean much for other Merchant-Ivory films.

I was hoping to pick up the previously released Blu-Ray if I could find it for a good price and am currently reading the novel, but this is good news!
Whether or not Criterion can release more Merchant Ivory films, I hope to see them on Blu-Ray soon! Especially Maurice. I also own the Criterion DVD, but would love to get it in HD as well. |

I must say, "a room with a view" and "Howards End" may be my two favorite films ever produced. They both have genuine magic in them, which elevates them from cinema to a genuine experience that is simply thrilling, and I think those who have seen these films know exactly what I mean. "A room with a view" makes you feel as if you are floating on air. And even better still, the magic remains in repeat viewings. I watch it at least once every two years.
I have the prior blu-Ray release, and it is gorgeous. I have no problem double dipping, especially with a new 4k restoration by Criterion, but like I said, the previous release really is top notch. I am extremely curious about the audio at 2.0, and anxious to do a proper comparison on both the picture and sound come late September. I second or third, whatever, everyone else's request for "Maurice". That really deserves the Criterion high def treatmen as well. plus, it will complete my Merchant Ivory blu-ray collection 😉 |

This is such a wonderful surprise - has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it about 10 years ago, but I assumed when the other Merchant Ivory titles went OOP that this would not go Criterion.
Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen. Warm, romantic, entertaining, and incredibly satisfying - movies truly don't get better than this. |

But there are so many other Merchant-Ivory films that haven't been released on Bluray.
![]() Or did you mean it will complete your collection of the ones you like? By the way just popped in the ost to listen to and enjoy in anticipation of the Bluray! I have this triple cd which is a must for Ivory and soundtrack fans: http://www.amazon.com/Forster-Trilogy-Room-Maurice-Howards/dp/B000002SIK/ ![]() Also, does anyone think that the font used for the title on the Bluray would be more fitting for a gothic horror Dracula type film? Or is it just me? ![]() Last edited by filmmusic; 06-17-2015 at 08:19 AM. |

Good news. I guess I wasn't aware of the hints about this title from Criterion. I'd been upset that I passed on the previous BD release before it went OOP and considered picking up one of the international BD releases. But the previous transfers look like crap by most reports.
