That's pretty cool. I have a Newbury comics near me that sells some new vinyl (the bigger store with better inventory is too far away from me), and there's a small mom-and-pop book store that sells tons of used books. But it will be sad when Barnes and Noble is gone. My girlfriend and I both love that place, both for browsing and for discovering new books.

People also believe Blu ray is far more expensive than DVD when it is really not

Some DVDs look pretty great on my 46", but of course non-anamorphic discs are a complete no-go for me. It amazes me that people must still watch non-anamorphic DVDs on their HDTVs, but then I remember that people also watch things in the wrong aspect ratio and don't even know what's wrong (or care).

Borders is gone, Waldenbooks is gone, and the only place left in my area that sells books (other than Walmart's and Target's puny section) is Barnes and Noble - and half their store has a big empty space in the middle used to advertise and sell their e-readers. So digital has hurt the retail book store presence severely.

Sure, you can still buy books online, but the days of going into a bookstore and browsing, or sitting back and reading a few pages to see how it reads before deciding on a book, is almost gone. Barnes and Noble probably won't have a retail presence in another 5-10 years. They're already announcing closing many of their stores and downsizing.
I'd bet that has far more to do with Amazon than ebooks.

The upside is the niche format will cater more to the film enthusiast, meaning cooler extras, packaging, booklets and whatnot. Not saying every release will be a deluxe Criterion type thing, but on average we will see less catalog dumps and more interesting releases.

But yeah, prices are going to go up, and have already started to, whether UBD or regular BD ends up being that niche format.

Yes.

Digital is slowly taking over, make no mistake, but it's going to take a while and it's really online ordering that has killed the retail presence of movies and books and whatnot today. 15 years after MP3 supposedly killed the CD they still make CDs, and they take up roughly half of full album sales. It's just no one really buys them in a store anymore. Same thing for books, same thing for movies increasingly.

I buy a lot of movies, at least 2-3 a week a lot of the time, but I have probably been to a retail store looking for movies maybe three or four times this year.

Yeah, even though I prefer Blu-Ray I gotta be honest DVDs can still look pretty damn good on large displays. Just as long as the DVD Player is connected using Component Video Cables or HDMI and if the DVD features a good transfer.

I don't understand how people are happy ordering their movies online. So many arrive damaged from Amazon.

I have about 850 BDs and I'd estimate at least 500 of them are from amazon.com, amazon.ca and amazon.uk. I've been ordering DVDs and BDs from them for about 15 years.

I've never received a damaged disc. I think I had one BD arrive off the spindle but it was fine. Perhaps two had a chip of plastic broken off the case.

Ironically, I still fear the arrival of damaged discs and I open every package and inspect every disc for scratches as soon as it arrives. But it's an irrational fear not borne out by the numbers.

I've got real doubts about that.

It sounds the pitch for Blu-ray in the early days.

Remember the trumpeting of BD Live and things like picture-in-picture special features? I have a couple of those circa 2008 BDs with neat picture-in-picture features. I don't know what happened to that...don't see much of it anymore (but I buy almost entirely catalogue films these days). I've got an old HD DVD flyer from 2007 touting a whole range of "Superior Interactivity, mulitple video streaming, instant access..."

The last BD I watched didn't even have a trailer.

If you want certain titles you have to order online otherwise their is no way to get them. Besides if something arrives damaged, usually if you complain they refund you or replace it.

Labels like Criterion, Arrow and Scream are the future of disc media, assuming the sales are there to support a niche market. These labels usually lure in enthusiasts with features and packaging to offset the higher price niche markets require. Even a quick-n-dirty label like Kino uses original poster art and adds new commentaries and interviews when they can.

I'm not saying this will be a consistent thing, but we should see more of it the more niche disc media gets.

A damaged disc, no, but I've had my fair share of damaged/broken cases and/or cover art. However, those instances have been a small percentage of my orders from Amazon.

Why would playing it on a Blu-ray player change how it looks?

The only damaged movies I've ever gotten have been from Hastings. Any place else including eBay has been 99% perfect.
