Default The iPhone Handles 1080P Video Just Fine

I love the iphone but i find this article hard to believe that the iphone can accept 1080p. WHat do you guys think?

http://gizmodo.com/5045466/the-iphon...ideo-just-fine

Logically speaking, it shouldn't be a huge surprise. But a friend in the industry told us that they've seen H.264 1080P video playing on the iPhone, quite a few times, with no problems at all. Of course, the resolution is absurd overkill for the system's screen, but what's this mean in light of the purported iTunes 8 HD? Potentially a lot.

For one, if iTunes 8 indeed goes HD, the iPhone is more than ready to run its content natively—especially considering that iTunes HD clips would probably be the same as Apple TV's (which is just 720P). That means no needing to convert HD clips for the iPhone/iPod touch (or maybe even the next generation of iPod?), which would seem more like Apple's style.

And while running videos at a higher resolution than needed isn't ideal for processing or syncing times, who knows, with the right adapters, maybe the iPhone could even put this video on your HDTV.

It's tough to tell exactly how Apple would handle iTunes in HD since clips would still presumably have to work on hardware like the iPod Classic and iPod nano—both of which lack the umpf of the iPhone's 620Mhz processor (though, yes, h.264 decoders in all current iPods/the iPhone handle decoding). But if the iPhone handles HD clips, that certainly buys Apple some flexibility.

People just need to stop taking Gizmodo (or Engadget for that matter) seriously. Their articles only periodically make sense, are frequently biased, and are usually based on a combination of rumor, speculation, and only half-understood technology on the part of the writers. And that's the articles... the comments section is usually something completely out of the Twilight Zone.

As for the iPhone playing back 1080p, good for it... and they maybe got that part right. It would work at 1/4 resolution in order to hope to keep up with decoding, which would make more sense given the screen resolution anyway, but I guess you can still say it plays 1080p files... even if it never does so at 1080p. As for why anyone would EVER want to transfer 1080p video to their iPhone, I don't think they understand the market (or Apple's plans) at all. They are again correct that the iTunes HD clips will mostly be 720p, but virtually all of them will also have an iPhone optimized version at a much lower resolution that doesn't take up the entire storage space on an iPhone to store one movie. I have no idea why they think anyone would download the HD file for iPhone use -- even if the system does technically let you.

iphone screen is just 480x320, why does HD even matter ?
it isn't even dvd resolution yet.
and i think the iphone processor is just 800+ mhz, unless it has some asic doing video, i don't think the system can take it.

A little birdie told me that a firmware update would unlock 720p output, and that was nearly a year ago.

Yeah, and a firmware update is going to bring:
  • Volume booster so you can actually hear the stupid thing
  • Flash capability for Safari
  • A miraculous screen-fix app that fixes the edges of your screen when they start to go yellow
  • And a firmware update that builds a new 3G network for AT&T from the ground up so you can actually use it reliably
Not saying that 720p output isn't coming (though given the processor you may not want to see the actual quality), just that I think most people with an iPhone have many things higher on their list of needs than 720p video output.

Given that the official video playback specs of the iPhone are currently limited (according to Apple's spec page anyway) to 640x480 resolution at 2.5Mbps or less, it doesn't seem really likely anyway.

Maybe in the 12th generation iPhone, though (which should be out 1 week after you buy the 11th gen), it'll be there.

The Apple iPhone plays 1080p HD video? With only 320 X 480 native pixels in the iPhone display?

Some doofus obviously has been drinking waaaay too much of the Apple Kool-Aid.

Geez, with this kind of stupid "logic," someone will hook up a Blu-ray player to an old Philco TV set and claim it's just as good as the latest, greatest 120Hz HDTV monitors. Viewing distance is the only issue. "Yeah, buddy. My old, little TV screen is hangin' with the big dogs on this here Blu-ray thang!"
