Default PS3 and IP Address issues

OK. So here's the deal (again, as i'm sure most of you have heard this before) I can't get an IP address with my PS3. It has a wired connection directly into my modem.

I've already turned the PS3 off and unplugged the router then hooked it all back up (more than once) and nothing's happened.

What should I do?

Also, I don't have a PC so I can't look up the IP address on there and I have NO clue how to do it on a mac.

So you have a Mac? You should invest in an Airport.

OK I found my IP address on the mac... but when I manually type it into the PS3 I can't go forward. Just back. If I hit manual again I go back to the same screen. If I hit automatic I get the error again.

Do you have your computer hooked up as well? If so try hooking the PS3 up and unplug the computer. Some routers have multiple inputs, but cannot rout the signal. You may have to go buy a router.

Nope. No luck.

How do I input the ip address manually and go from there? I can input it but not move forward. Just back. If I want to move forward I have to go to automatic IP setting. Doesn't that just over-ride the manual input and just keep me in a non-working loop?

This may not be the right fix for your situation, but here you go:

1.) Unplug modem
2.) Disconnect ethernet cord from your Mac
3.) Let the modem stay unpowered for about 30 min
4.) Connect ethernet cord to PS3
5.) Plug in modem

I have no idea if a router can be "fixed" like a modem can.

Hope this helps.

and make sure the PS3 is off when you plug the modem back in, then when it is set and ready turn the PS3 back on.

ok I did all that and then did a manual IP address.

My ps3 said it found an IP address but got a "DNS error" and couldn't reach internet connection.

Don't do manual. Use the automatic feature.

Also let it sit for 30 min unplugged. You responded 10min after I posted that so I'm going to guess you didn't leave it unplugged for the full 30.

I use a wired connection to my PS3 and you have to let the modem "let go" of the old IP address before you can use it for your PC and vice versa. Just let it sit unplugged.

Can you explain the 30min unplugged? Circuits only need a few seconds at the max to stabilize. I recommend purchasing a router as well and using a static ip address for each machine. Its much simpler to manage. PM me if you need some assistance doing this.

Left it unplugged for 30 minutes. I CANNOT find an ip address if I do it automatically.

If I do it manually I CAN find an ip address but I get a "DNS error."

Can you list your hardware (router brand, model, and as well modem brand and model. I might be able to help you. Also on your apple can you go to system preferences and click network in there choose ethernet and then look at for your IP address, DNS server and Router IP.

My Apple is running Tiger.

My DNS server is just blank. But that's under TCP/IP. Not Ethernet.

I have a linksys modem(BEFCMU10) and linksys router(EZXSS5W).
