Default Annoying Onkyo 605 problem.

Hey guys. I bought my Onkyo 605 almost a year ago, and ive dealt with this insanely annoying (what-appears-to-be) "overheating" issue the entire time. Basically, when i turn it up too loud (arount 70) and a bass-ey part kicks in, the receiver shuts itself off and flashes a red light at me.
If anybody knows how to fix this, or any ideas on stopping it from happening, it would be great if you could post them.

At first i thought it was the speaker wiring
- So i bought new speaker cable and re-hooked everything back up

Nothing.

Then i began to think it was my (slightly destroyed) HDMI cable
- So i bought a new one

Nothing.

And now im beginning to think it is because i don't have a sub-woofer. Which may or may not be the issue. ...but before i go shell out however much money it'll cost for a decent subwoofer, it would be nice to know if the problem will remain.

Anybody wanna buy an Onkyo 605!?
...payed 650.00 for this thing, and i got a deal for knowing a guy that works at the place where i got it. Gotta love Canada...

Anyway, Heres a video i made displaying the problem in real time (not that its hard to capture. It happens all the time).

Interesting approach - to make a video of the problem. I could barely make out your voice though.

It might say the ohm rating on the speaker???

A 4 ohm load may drive your receiver to hard and cause it to shut down or go into protection mode from running to hot.

Found it! The sticker was ripped off on the speaker i was checking.

They are 8 ohm speakers. (the fronts)

My back speakers are 6 Ohm, 200 watts.

I dont have the 7.1 up anymore since i moved the receiver.

try calling onkyo, they can help you figure out what's wrong. almost the same thing happened to my 605 when i first got it. i got it replaced right away though. it goes into protect mode when there's a short somewhere in the system. so you have to find out where the short is. isolate the problem by unplugging everything but the fm antenna and turn the volume up when tuned into a station. if it stays on then it's most likely one of your connections.

Those speakers are 8 ohm, so you should be fine there. I would look at you connections next, then it would be time to get warranty replacement

Default Overheating and Fan solutions

WOW $650. I think i paid $525 for my onkyo 705 1.5 years ago. Anyways, I have read about the overheating problem on the AVS forums. I purchased an auxiliary fan to place on the rear right corner since that is where a majority of the heat is coming from. This is the BTX fan i bought since i am working with limited room. With your setup it might be better to go with something like this.

I checked out the AVS forum and the 605 thread didn't have a nice FAQ like the 705 thread does. Read up on this thread Onkyo TX-SR705. I know its the model above yours but most of the information is relative. When you go there hit "CRTL + F" and type in "temperature" and read about the way your receiver can display a temperature readout to see if its actually overheating.

Hope this helps. If i learn about anymore info I will let you know.

Edit: Check and see if any firmware updates are available.

Cant possible be the connections.

It was doing this a little while after i set it up. (Sorry about that. I just remembered... it worked fine for a couple of weeks) Then, i unhooked it and re-hooked it up hoping it would solve the problem. Didn't work.
And now about 3 weeks ago, i moved the whole receiver, TV, and speakers into my bedroom meaning i needed to unhook and re-hook it up again.

By warranty replacement, do you mean the receiver or the speakers? Cause the speakers are definately out of warranty now.
Im assuming onkyo has a one year warranty on their receivers, so im sure i could send that back if i needed to.

The receiver. If your connections are good and your speakers are 6-8 ohms, then your receiver should not be doing that.

Thanks for the links! Ill see if putting a fan near it helps, but i dont think this is an overheating issue since it happens even seconds after you turn the receiver on.

hmmm. Well thats just wonderful... So i guess ill call Onkyo tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Not sure how well this is going to go since i have no proof of when i purchased the thing. (It was a little after christmas).

Thanks for the help Jason and everybody else! Appreciate it...

Still, if anybody else has any ideas im here clicking reload every couple of minutes while i play PS3.

it is not a heating problem. it goes into protect mode because of shorting problems. forget the fan shenanigans. some onkyos have fans built in for circumstances where the heat is unbearable. not everything is as fragile as an xbox 360.

Hahaha. I dont think anything is.

Wonder how Onkyo's tech support is gonna be.

Edit: Well, just for the fun of it, i put a rather large fan blowing onto the receiver.
...worth a try.

Hey again. I fixed it! ...slightly.

I guess it was overheating. I took a giant white window fan and stuck it on top of the receiver blowing directly down into it.

I turned the volume up to 80 and did multiple force blasts in Star Wars The Force Unleashed (extreme bass) and it hasnt happened once yet.

Its great that its working and all, but im not really enjoying a window fan laying on top of my receiver...

Ill still call Onkyo and see what they say about it. Theres no way it should be overheating within seconds of turning it on...

Edit: Just turned it up full blast and did a force blast. I didnt even know this thing went that loud ! But anyway, it worked. Im still not liking the giant white noisy fan laying on top of my receiver, but hey... whatever. Its fine for the night.

Thanks again everybody.

I think the best thing to do is to place the fan so it blows cool air above the receiver and moves the hot air that rises away from it.
I use an antec av cooler on mine. It has two fans that suck the hot air from the receivers vents and blows it through the back away from the receiver and other components nearby.

You also mentioned that you turn it to 70! that is pretty damn loud, i have yet to go beyond 60 for everything. How long do you keep it at that level? Do you have bass turned up on your tone control?

I was thinking that was pretty loud too. Anything over 60 on my 606 and Klipsch set-up makes my ears bleed.

Hahaha. Yup. I like it loud. 70-ish is good for me. Unless its something like Resistance or Warhawk, then it goes louder... Thank god i dont have a sub-woofer, huh?
