Default Weird Onkyo 605/606 Problem

Hi,

So, as you may have already read in a previous post, I use an Onkyo 605 amp along with my Laptop (HDMI Out) and its working as it should, I use the FN+F4 key untill all the display switches to the TV/AMP, and I can play movies etc as they should. It detects a Surround Sound amp and switches to 7.1 by itself (in the control panel).

Heres the weird thing, my brother-in-law, has the Onkyo 606, one level up from mine, but when I plug it into his, I have no Surround Sound option, no 7.1 selection, only Stereo. Is this something to do with a new chip in the 606?

He probably doesn't have his receiver on the right listening mode. It should be direct, which you can do via a button on your 605 remote, or on the device itself.

The 606 for whatever reason, doesn't do it the way it's always been done and you have to activate your listening mode in the system setup menu. Read your manual if you need to figure out how this is done. It's simple, but there is a 2nd page to the menu you need to get to, don't forget about it.

Hi again,

Just tried the 'direct' method, but it still didnt pick up the surround sound option, heres a screenshot of it while its plugged into the Onkyo 606. the video works fine, but still got the surround sound problem;

usually below the 'stereo' there is '7.1 surround' as an option. I still get the 7.1 on my Onkyo 605, but the laptop doesnt pick it up on the 606. any other suggestions are more than welcome.
