Hello all,
My PS3 malfunctioned the other day and man, I wish it would stay. Wondering if anybody else has/had this issue. Basically, when I bought my PS3 I was discovered that I had to select HDMI (hooked into my T.V) or Optical through my receiver (the only way I can get DD/DTS - since my receiver doesn't have an HDMI hookup). Ok fine. But I had to choose one or the other, meaning I either had to use my receiver or my T.V. only. I called Sony and asked if a future update would fix this. I explained that I didn't like having to go into the menu everytime I wanted to listen to a certain source. Heck, my old DVD player can be connect to two different audio sources and depending on which one I turn on (my T.V. or reciever) I hear sound. They said, "This is a hardware issue and there are no future plans as of this time to change this; however, they do understand my concern". Annoyingly short-sighted, if you ask me. Seems like a basic function. Now then, the other day, all of a sudden - sound came out of my T.V. I turned on my receiver and sound was working fine from there too! Then, later it went away. It happened again a few weeks later and lasted half the day. I would love if this malfunction could stay. I don't always want a Home Theater experience everytime I play a game, and I don't want to have to go into the sound menu before every game/movie. Anyone else had this experience or been able to find a work-around. Very curious. (And as a side-note, the other day my Homecourt NBA played in DTS.) Strange. Take it easy all, |

Well, I've not had that happen and can't, with my setup but at least it proves that Sony is lying to you. If it can happen on accident it can happen on purpose.

Exactly, if it can happen on accident it should be able to work at all times. Unless it is some kind of short, etc. - which actually kind of worries me. I would really like to just be able to turn on my T.V. and have sound come out without having to go and readjust the sound menu option from the optical. I tend to listen to movies through my big speakers, but most games I prefer through the T.V.

You have to remember....most of the people you talk to on the phone from these companies have absolutely no experience in this stuff. They are given a booklet, or website where they can reference questions like these. If they don't know, they will give you some BS.
I've had this happen to me with issues before. I call with a basic understanding, and need some clarification on a certain issue, and they feed me some line that I know to be untrue! It's frustrating! |

I would like to have sound through HDMI AND Optical also. I do not have a reciever with HDMI and I do not always want the surround sound experiance also. I want to be able to turn on my reciever and mute my TV and that is that. I was able to do that with my PS2, Xbox and Xbox360 with no problems.
As for the question, I did have the same malfunction once. I am not sure what I or Sony did, but it was shortly after an update. I did not last long. I tested it once and it worked only that one time. |

Works fine for me. I think you should have someone else you know that have a PS3 hook yours up, since you sound a little confused, It's highly probable that you don't have it hooked up or setup right or even both. |

Please exlplain the process for the rest of us. My PS3, last time I checked, selected one at a time only. If you have optical an go back and change the setting to HDMI, the T.V. now has sound and the receiver doesn't. (Remember, my HDMI is hooked to my T.V. and my Reciever is getting the optical out.) Any assistance anyone has would be most appreciated. Just to reiterate - I don't have a problem with these working one at a time (one or the other) I want both going, so I can select the source as I see fit and have working - my T.V. or Receiver. Thanks all. (I'll go play around with some more setting and see what happens, but I believe accepting one setting overides the other.) |

Sometimes there is no sound through my reciever. I don't keep my receiver on all the time. If I have turned it off I may encounter this issue the next time I want to use it.
If I try and use my receiver and there is no sound coming out I first make sure I selected the right input. (You won't get TV sound if the reciever is switched to CD.) If there still is no sound I will switch the input on my TV. Let's say my TV is on the PS3 and I do not hear anything on my receiver. I use the TV's remote and change it the input from the PS3 to something else, say my cable box. After I see the picture I switch the TV's input back to the PS3. Ouila I have sound coming out of the receiver and the TV. I can easily fix the problem just with a remote so it isn't any big deal. It's just some weird initialization thing which reminds me of a router or something. It sounds as quirky as your problem. See what you are doing to occasionally get sound or try following my advice and see what happens. |

Cymbol, you definitely sound confused. Maybe you should employ a professional installer to come out and get all your equipment hooked up so it works properly. It took me a good while to figure out how to get all my equipment hooked up so everything worked.

You have to tell the PS3 to use Optical for Sound. If you dont, sound will go through HDMI which will use your TV's speakers. No problems here.

Basically: You can only select HDMI OR Optical, not both? True? I thought it was True, but many people think I'm confused somehow. (Correct me if I'm wrong). My problem with the PS3 is this: Lets use an anology Lets pretend my standard DVD player has two audio sources. Stereo outputs (red and white RCA cables) that I connect to my T.V. Then I run an optical cable to my receiver. Still with me? Now, when I turn on my T.V. - I have sound. Also, when I turn on my receiver, I have sound. My issue with the PS3 is I have to select either/or. Now substitute an HDMI cable for the red and white RCA jacks. On the PS3 I have to keep going into the menu settings to change the sound source. I should play from any sound source I have hooked up at all time IMO. Sometimes, it all of a sudden will play from both (at the same time). That was the "malfunction" I would like to keep. Ok, did I clear things up, or confuse everybody more? Please feel free to correct me. Thanks guys, take it easy, |
