Thumbs up Target expands Blu-ray space for hardware, software.

Target expands Blu-ray space for hardware, software. Move a response to customer demand.

Quote:
VB:Target has significantly stepped up its Blu-ray Disc software and hardware merchandising, as it responds to rising customer demand for the format.

Starting in July, the chain reconfigured its home entertainment sections, granting Blu-ray titles 18 feet of in-rack display space. For two Los Angeles-area stores, that amounts to room for 150 title facings, marking a 67% jump from these same outlets' disc slots in May.

"Our goal is to create a fun, intuitive shopping environment where our guests will find all of there wants and needs under one roof," Target spokesman Joshua Thomas said. "Our guests are becoming increasingly interested in high-definition, and we are committed to providing them with a great assortment of the industry's best solutions."

Yeah I noticed this awhile back at the SuperTarget near me, they have quite a good selection and definitely have expanded. There is a setup in the regular DVD section with a demo constantly running saying how much better BR is over DVD, then another one over in the hardware section.

At the regular Target near me though, the BR section is pathetic. Not sure if this expansion is for regular Target or what.

Yeah, I only have a normal target, which has, like, no blu-rays at all. Where's Superman?

All of the Targets in my area, super or not, have the 18 ft. blu ray aisle with the demo playing.

All the Targets near me expanded their selections last July. I am sure there will be some Targets that don't expand for a while since they possibly don't sell as many as others in other areas. Hopefully they will have some good deals on Black Friday this year. They always have a few DVDs that are super cheap. But of course, if they do, they will probably be BDs that have been out for a while and no one will want.

The Target stores in the South Florida area are following the pattern indicated in the article.

I haven't checked mine lately but I hope they're significantly expanding their sections so they can compete with Best Buy in that regard (selection-wise).

Edit: Actually, checked just recently and the local Target had morphed into a superstore and significantly increased the blu-ray section. They had been remodeling for a while now but I had no idea they were expanding as well.

I noticed this a while back as well. It's kind of sad though, now that I think about it... not sad, maybe nostalgic.

As blu-ray expanded, the HD-DVD space was shrinking. Man, the ol' format war.

My small town Target store has about a 12' aisle with a demo playing but over a 32" 720p HDTV . I suppose at that close range it does reveal what Blu-ray is all about (except for the sound) but just barely. Still I give them credit for gearing up and stocking a fair selection of Blu-rays and joining in the competition. That's good for Blu-ray. However they still won't be getting much business from me selling them at full retail. On occasion I have bought BDs from them when none of the other dealers in town had in stock a particular title that I just had to have right then.

I hope the sales numbers directly reflect the increase space allotted..

If they make that much more now than they did earlier this year... Blu-ray may be more of a hit than we all thought.

Yeah same here...

This artical is bad reporting... reported as if it is breaking news (the date on it is 10-15-08, while it broke on this site the day it happened, if not sooner).

The guy who wrote it (the artical, not the OP) should be ashamed.

Speaking of Target and Blu-ray, I got a coupon at check out (one of those receipt printed things) that is for $5.00 a Blu-ray movie. Keep an eye on those receipts.

i was just mentioning this in another thread - my local smaller target doubled it's shelving size and the nearest larger target is a pretty decent 18 ft run - both were still sold out of the The Hulk on Wednesday - good news all around to see that

The thread titled "Walmart pushing upgrade to BLU" in this same section?

If this is all true it will certaintly increase sales on all Blu ray equipment, HDTV, as well as, Blu ray disc.

Target does a great job merchandising the blu-ray format. Most stores I have been in have a full aisle of blu-rays plus the end cap for new releases. They have a nice display with player and TV on another aisle with a smaller selection of titles there as well.

The only thing I think is that for retailers to really show it off they should have a 40"+ HDTV properly calibrated right above the Blu-ray section.
