Default PS3 setup help (new to this)

Hi everyone I just got my first PS3 today, and WOW. I'm blown away by it. Ok anyway

I have the video setup to HDMI
My audio is setup to Optical digital (fiber optic cable, it's the best I got rihgt now)

My question is. 1. what kind of settings should I put it on (PS3) to get the MOST out of it wiht my current setup, I want as much Bass as possible from my theater system.(yes optical is the best I can do being that the current receiver I have optical is the best.)
and 2. how the heck do you turn off the system and put it in a stand-by type of mode wiht out turning off the on-off switch in the back of the unit.

Any and all hepl is greatly appreicated.

I wish I would have bought a PS3 a long time ago it beats any stand-alone player by a long shot -at least so far anyway.

Well what kind of a reciever do you have? The easiest way to put it in sleep mode is to hold the power button on the front or by pressing the Playstation button on the controller. This will bring up a menu, allowing you to turn it off that way as well.

I'm not sure about the audio settings but to turn the system off (stand by mode) just hold the PS button on the controller or the remote for a few seconds you will see a message to turn off the system or turn off the controllers. Just select the turn system off and it will go to stand by.

Hopefully someone else here that is more familiar with Optical can help you set it up right.

Thanks holding the power button worked ok thast out of the way.

As far as my receiver it's one of th first that phillips ever came out with, the bugger don't even have a DTS decoder in it. but the the highest setup modes are 5.1 channle direct analog output, and optical output.

Sounds like you need a theater upgrade.

You aren't the only one who is new to this stuff. I had a tough time updating my player so Forgetting Sarah Marshall would go anywhere past the main menu.

Okay, since for right now the only option is Optical, go to the Audio Ouput Settings menu and choose optical. From there use the on screen prompts. If I remember right it should let you choose manually or automatically for the audio options. Good choice going with the 805, I have one and will love it. Just make sure you have adequate ventillation for this, it's a beast.

Thse are the main things you need to know about PS3's audio capabilities:
  1. Optical (Toslink) and Digital S/PDIF cables cannot carry Dolby Digital Plus, DTS HD High Resolution Audio, LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD Master audio signals. You need an HDMI cable.
  2. If you are using PS3 as your disc (both Blu-Ray and standard DVD) player and your receiver does not have an HDMI connection, use an Optical cable and set the PS3's audio output to Bitstream. However, you will only get Dolby Digital or DTS Digital surround signals.
  3. If you are using PS3 as your Blu-Ray player and your receiver has an HDMI connection, use an HDMI cable and set the PS3's audio output to LPCM.
  4. If you are using a standard DVD in PS3 and an HDMI connection, you can set the player’s audio output either to bitstream or LPCM.
  5. The PS3 is not capable of carrying the high definition audio signals in bitstream format.
