I was just curious. Do bent steelbooks make you exchange it? Broken disc trays, hubs?
I was just curious how often avid collectors return/exchange movies? I got BvS digi and when I opened it the day of release the disc was on the hub but not pressed down at all. I realized that had to be caused my me opening it bc if it was my car or some step in the process of getting it to the store it would just be floating around the case. No scratches at least to the naked eye and I will actually watch it tomorrow (been busy). But then again, I pay the exact same price for a bluray/dvd combo from http://STORE.nba.com and I heard the fed ex guy just throw it on the porch, I heard the disc loose in the case and I see a faint scratch. I am exchanging it and started the process already (unless they deny me ![]() So basically 2 loose discs, 1 I know caused by me and not really "loose" and another just carelessly tossed by the door and that probably cause it to fly off the hub. Only exchanging 1. I also know scratches don't really affect playback on blurays but its the principle of the fact is was actually caused BEFORE delivery. |

If the case is anything less than 100% mint condition, I'll return it.
Just this past Barnes and Noble 50% off Criterion sale, I returned one title with a minor spine slash on the case and another one that was chipped on the inside, so that it would hold the disc properly. ...I won't accept anything that I can't honestly list in "like new" condition in the event that I want to see it or trade some day. |

I don't...
Unless a film won't play or arrives just utterly destroyed (which I've never had happen thus far) I keep it. While I'd prefer not to have any floaters they're not something I typically worry about. Cases being cracked are an annoyance for sure, but if the cover art is ok I just swap cases myself. I rarely purchase steelbooks, so I haven't had to worry about ding's and dents much. The steels I do purchase usually come from Synapse or in store anyways so they're either well protected or inspected before purchase. Quote:

I won't do it for cosmetic purposes on anything but steel books. I got the BvS digi and the actual goo used to hold the jcard on left a crater on the cover, again I chalked it up to normal wear and tear and my reasoning was that I wasn't going to find a mint digi anywhere.

The most important thing to me is steelbooks. If they only have a small blemish, or a minor spine slash, I keep them. If they are dented, or the inside tray is damaged, I send it back. Standard blu-rays, I only return if the case is cracked, or if the disc is damaged. I like slipcovers to be in very good condition, but they don't have to be perfect. I love my collection, but I'm not OCD like some people are in this forum. Life's to short to worry about the little things, it's the big things I worry about.

As a collector, I have every right to expect my purchases to arrive in mint condition. "This mind set only contributes to the ever increasing price on things" Your evidence for this being what? |

![]() I figure I can always buy replacement cases anyways. But any major damage to the disc or paper insert (that I can't see without opening the packaging) always results in a return. Also with Amazon, any dinged corners (since I usually buy boxed sets from them) means it's going back. I suppose I'm more liberal with my Amazon returns because they make it so easy ![]() I just can't justify making multiple trips back to a store over minor things like cracked cases, a few marks on the disc or creases on the cover. Do they bug me? A bit. But I just don't have the time or energy to keep taking stuff back. I also used to run around trying to price match to save a buck or two. Don't really do that anymore either, I just go to whatever store I happen to be passing by. If Best Buy has something for $15, I'm not going half an hour out of my way to get it for $13.50 at Wal-Mart... it's ridiculous to think I actually used to worry about stuff like that (both the minor blu-ray imperfections and PMing) ![]() |

I think the only time I've exchanged a Blu-way was because the Steelbook was damaged. A couple years ago I bought the Van Helsing Steelbook with comic book-style art. When I got it home, I realized the spine was a little bent, causing it to not close properly once I had initially opened it. I took it back the next day and had a hell of a time exchanging it. I had removed the shrink wrap and it turned out the UPC on the Steelbook was different from the one on the shrink wrap, so it wasn't even showing up in their system. Eventually, the girl told me to just go grab another one. She simply put it in my bag with the receipt for my first one and said "There you go. Have a nice day."

Only when the disc or cover is damaged.
I've had a few floaters and cracked cases, but nothing serious. I don't like the hassle of going through the motions of getting a new item sent to me either, so I usually let it pass. The only time I asked for a replacement I could keep the damaged one and they sent me a new one for free. |

If the disc is loose AND is scratched I will, or if the cases are crushed with ripped artwork so I can't just put it in a spare case. I've never had anything with fancy packaging arrive damaged, so I'm not sure how I'd react. I guess if the corners were dinged and all white I might do it. If I'm actually going to watch the film I don't really care too much about case condition. WIth some of the TT things I bought specifically because they were about to sell out and still haven't decided whether I want to watch them or sell them (and still have sealed) I guess I might have exchanged them if they were cracked.

The only times I took it back to a store, were when the disc itself skipped. But I probably haven't even actually done this since the DVD days. I don't believe I've returned or exchanged a single blu-ray disc. People that do this all the time obviously have something wrong with them IMO. I did have a couple of blu-rays I would have returned because of "skipping" issues, but unfortunately I waited way too long to open them (I'm talking years, so obviously my receipts were long gone).
I don't return over superficial packaging issues, though I do generally check to make sure the disc isn't loose (as that would indicate a broken disc hub). If it was a box set and came severely damaged, I would of course return it. But I've never had that actually happen (knock on wood). If there's a hidden/minor ding on a steel-book, or even if I'm surprised to find a standard case is broken - I don't find it worthwhile to wait in line to process a return or exchange. I have a supply of non-eco replacement cases (so I'm replacing cases anyway) -and my time is worth more than a replacement case. I just don't want to go through customer service for something so trivial. One time I got a really damaged digibook from Amazon, I would have returned that one if I had paid full price. But as it was a bargain buy (and everyone else was reportedly having issues with dinged corners) - I figured it I'd probably just get another damaged one - given the cheap price I didn't really care to return it either. All I care about is the disc, as long as it works fine I'll keep it. So far the only Blu-ray discs I've bought that didn't work were ones that came in terrible cases that provided no protection (House of Cards & Black Sails). As soon as I got working copies of those I put them in standard cases.

The case has to be really damaged for me to return a perfect disc. Like really crushed or a massive cut in it or something, not some tiny crease. Obviously if the disc is scratched enough to effect playback I will return it. Scratched discs that DON'T effect playback is always a tough decision, and I probably mostly default to just keeping them and not going through the hassle.
Broken disc hubs are no big deal because I usually have extra cases. |

I order online and return in store. People can criticize me all they want. If insisting that my cases be in mint condition is wrong, then I guess I'm Hannibal Lecter. ...I sleep just fine. ![]() |
