Disclaimer: If you say that you liked Die Another Day, your opinion doesn't count.
What about the James Bond books, I am sure Connery bases his character on the character in the books. Jeez......

One more thing, the ending of this movie in the hotel room with Granny trying to kick Bond with the poisonous knife that protrudes from her shoe is pure comedy. The futile way she kicks just made me laugh!

A little off topic, I am surprised at how many people like OHMSS, I thought it was just me. It is my favorite movie (and Bond book) and I can't wait for it to get to Blu. Unfortunately, I'll have to wade through the crummy ones like Moonraker, Octo***** and Licence to Kill before they get to it, I'm sure. My last note is that I don't think that Lazenby is a very good actor, but he definitely had the best written script/story to work with.

(LOL at the post editing the title above)
There was nothing wrong with license to kill or any of the Dalton films. A lot of people assume that the reason why the Bond franchise went on hold was because it flopped. While it did flop in the US it was because they screwed up the advertising than anything being wrong with the movie.

Yes there was also a lot of complaints about the Dalton Bond being to real world. Still both movies where huge successes. In 1990 The Property of a Lady which was meant to be Dalton's 3rd Bond film went into pre-production set for release in 91.

But Sony and MGM screwed it up with there rights issues. That was the reason the franchise was put on hold. Dalton for me was the second best actor to play Bond after Connery. It annoys me to this day that there are only 2 Bond films he has been in.

This was around 2004.

Ian Fleming actually recommended Roger Moore to play James Bond, but Cubby thought it was too close to "The Saint", which is why years later they approached Moore again as The Saint had stopped airing several years earlier.

United Artists wanted Burt Reynolds to play Bond, suggesting that an un-known British actor wouldn't work, but Saltzman and Broccoli kept to the vision they saw and had narrowed it down to Michael Caine and Sean Connery. After screen testing both they both chose Connery.

Moore did not want to let go of 007 after A View To A Kill, but he knew it was time and after a long talk with Cubby they both agreed to let Moore announce his retirement from the role.

Cubby's autobiography is a most excellent read - I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the world of Bond.
are you sure it wasn't after die another die was released? die another day came out in 2002.

I have every bond movie up to Casino Royale, and Never Say Never Again (non MGM) on DVD, and Casino Royale to me.... is one of the worst.....

I like the Suave, "Smack-a-ho" James Bond..... They're trying to make him more politically correct, ever since Brosnan, and I don't like it

From Russia With Love is one of my favorites.... as well as many others listed by others.......

If you blind-purchased these "Boring" 1960's Bond Flicks on Blu,

PM me a price-shipped, and I'll take them off your hands for you

That's an interesting take, but I had a very different one.

As this was essentially Bond's "origin story", I was very curious as to which Bond would show up when it came to dealing with women. Would it be the old school love-em-and-leave-em Bond, or the new school monogamous Bond? As you say, the series has vacillated back and forth.

What they did in Casino Royale was show us why Bond became the "smack-a-ho" Bond.
[Show spoiler]Vesper's betrayal
makes all of the future womanizing seem so much more grounded in character than it did before. I thought they really hit that out of the park.

They did the same thing with Bond's bumbling partner Carter in the very beginning of the film. That little detail explains why Bond will only work alone as he moves through the "later" films.

Casino Royale was a big surprise for me. I thought it was worthy of being one of Bond's best. I never thought I'd say that about a non-Connery Bond!

No I've just got the year wrong - it was 1999, and it was Goldfinger not Thunderball.

the problem with Craig is that he looks way too old and buff for role of Bond, he would have been perfect if he looked the way he did in the movie Tomb Raider, with dark hair of course. I wish Brosnan continued with the franchise without the cheese from Die Another Day, Halle Barry pretty much destroyed that movie.

Excuse me? Craig is the youngest Bond since Lazenby -- and he is MUCH younger than Brosnan!

I'm afraid I have to agree that FRWL is pretty boring.

Aside from the ridiculous gypsy camp attack, there is no action at all until the last 15 minutes. The boat chase lasts a minute or two and the other boats never really get close to Bond. The train fight is ok, again it's pretty short. The helicopter deal is ok, again over very fast. Overall I thought the villains were not developed very well and there's not really the exciting locations the Bond films are known for.

I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out why some people really love this movie and the only conclusion I can come to is that it's probably the most realistic Bond story. I honestly don't know what else it could be.

Craig was 38 when he made his first Bond.
Moore was 46 in his first movie, 58 in his last
Brosnan was 42 in his first Bond
Dalton was 43 in his first Bond
Connery was 41 in his last official Bond movie (53 in Never Say Never Again)

Craig is now 40, younger still than all the Bond's were in their first movie Connery notwithstanding.

Craig doesn't look old, he looks rugged and tough, like Bond should look.

For me, when I watch a film like this (early 60's), I try to think of it in context to it's year of release. I know this is difficult as we all have a tendency to compare against contemporary film making.

I think we must remember that in the early 60's there were no mobile phones, internet, games consoles and HDTV or Bourne.

At the cinema, this would have been another world for many viewers.

Personally I really enjoy this period for films. I also enjoy "From Russian" too. It may not have the hundred mile per hour action like films of this genre today, but instead has it's own paced period charm. I also enjoy films like Get Carter (Original) and The Italian Job (Original) which are examples of great films from their era.

I guess I am also a bit of a hypocrite as I don't like the Original Star Wars anymore. Enjoyed it at the time, but find it so dated and a shade "hammy" compared to contemporary Sci-Fi. But I never get tired of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Hope my thoughts above have cast a different light or perspective on older films. Would be interested to hear what the OP and other readers think.
