Heh, Had a coworker tell me Blu-Ray wouldn't last. HD DVD would be an easier transition since the players also play DVD's. Which I informed him that Blu-Ray players did too and he was like "Oh.....But HD DVD discs are the same size as dvds whereas Blu-Rays are not." Which I was like..."Uh....Yeah they are, man." He still wants to believe that HD DVD is gonna win cause it's the under-dog though. lol But, he did act a lot less anti-blu though afterwards. :P

The only thing that I think HD-DVD has going for it is that it has "DVD" in it. I can see the average consumer idiot going HD-DVD just because they dont know what blu-ray is.
But I go into stores pretending to be new at the High Def market and ask which player I should get. I have NOT ever gotten a sales rep to go HD-DVD. Never. |

I've had a couple of people tell me that BD has all the interactive features that HD DVD has. I've corrected them and told them those specs go into effect November 1st but only players introduced after that date have to be compliant. Players introduced before that date and sold after don't need to be compliant.
One of them decided to wait until the holidays to jump in, the other picked up an HD-A2 and is waiting for the PS3 price drop to pick one up. |

Some of these stories are dis-heartening don't you think???
Several people have stated that officiants in chain electronics stores are misinforming their customers.... This could seriously lead to a lot of people buying into the wrong product.... |

This is nothing new. The same thing was going on 25 years ago.

Have tried to correct all of the things here:
One new HD-DVD fanboy at HighDefDigest was told on other forums and belived that Blu-ray players did not play DVD:s. He tried to hold on to this for some time. He got banned after about one week. Many HD-DVD fanboys belive all Blu-ray titles are region coded. A minority of them are. Sony is not BDA... Many fanboys thought (still think) that HD-DVD is a format for better Audio/Picture quality even if the opposite is true because of the extra space and band width. Same codecs are used on both formats. HD-DVD fanboys also thought Europe belonged to HD-DVD because a couple of thousand more HD-DVD players was sold on the continent before the PS3-release. |

Most aren't especially from the companies that put out titles in both formats, they do not region code BD since the HD DVD version isn't. I think FOX ususally does, but what have they done for BD lately. And I think most of Sony, Buena Vista, and Lionsgate titles aren't region coded.
I couldn't find a list region coded titles although someone probably has one somewhere. |

Nope, only a minority of them are... Guess some HD-DVD fanboys lies did get to you first...
There are several places where you can see the region coding even if they not always are reliable. One that is temporarily down is this: http://bluray.lindsite.dk/ Another for the discs released in US is Amazon.com (correct information about most of the movies). Amazon.co.uk is for the releases in UK but are not always correct. Last edited by Merlins; 07-08-2007 at 08:49 PM. |

I work for a company that is pretty much a Microsoft run shop. Anyhow, we have a Microsoft consultant who comes in, helps us with deployments, vista bugs, architecture etc.
Well, sometimes we get into the discussion about Blu-ray vs. HD DVD. You wouldn't believe the FUD he spewed. And I hate to say it, but most of the Microsoft sheeple that are here took him at his word. Myself however, had to remind him that the BDA, comprised of more than 170+ companies, would inevitably trounce HD DVD or any hope Microsoft has of saturating the market with the HD DVD format in the form of Toshiba players only and of course the Toshiba built 360 add-on. He was of the mindset that the PS3 was too expensive and no one would buy it, yada yada yada. Approximately 4 million PS3 Blu-ray equipped players sold later and with the advent of the plethora of cheaper standalone Blu-ray players from Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung, Philips, Sony, and Pioneer, he appears to be somewhat humbled. Moreover, I too have gone into Best Buy and have had to correct only a few employees, but some were quite knowledgable about the benefits and advantages of Blu-ray. |

So far I have changed the mind of 7 people about wasting money on HD-DuD just this weekend I went with a friend to an EBGames to pick up so games and he was being brainwashed by some Halotard that kept saying that Blu was dead because there is no back up for it, so I let my friend ask for the HD-DuD add on and right before he paid I like a good friend of his that I am stopped him from making the mistake. So I ended up arguing with the employee about the formats and it all came down to what movies my friend wanted, turns out that he is looking forward movies like Spiderman, Surf's up, POTC, etc. which are only Blu and the employee stood there and I guess he couldn't figure out what to say so the best he could come up was that Sony was an evil coorporation and that no doubt will Blu die because they are greedy...wow! lol my friend picked up a PS3 and he is very happy with it!

early on, i had a friend who knew someone who had both a 360 with the hd-dvd add on, and a ps3...and he was telling me how much better cars looked on hd-dvd compared to blu-ray...now although he is WAY off base here considering not only is cars still not out in either hd format, but that it will never be on hd-dvd - i guess the 360 had dvd upscaling all along and back then the ps3 didnt so i can see what he might have been trying to say, but talking to him more i found out that he thought hd-dvd and blu-ray were just ways to 'unlock' HD picture from a regular dvd...LOL....so i explained everything to him and made him watch kingdom of heaven on blu-ray....now he gets it

GRRRRR! On the other hand, i saw more people looking at the Blu-ray demo than the 360. And even more looking at the Charlie and the Chocolate factory on HD-DVD... why can't I find THAT on Blu-ray? I also corrected a friend on Live Journal who said that the format war doesn't matter, and it isn't important, and he thought Blu-ray was proprietary and mentioned the whole Sony supporting Betamax and loosing thing. I sent him 2 replies saying that Blu is not proprietary, and that it is more important now than it will be when everyone is buying it, cause THIS is what will determine what people will buy. As for Sony, I reminded him that Sony also helped develop the CD and DVD. What has Microsoft made? Windows. Which gets lower reviews than Mac or Linux. (check that format war page, it's on there) I rest my case. |

I know a lady who bought Ricky Bobby BD because she thought it was a new type of packaging.
