Id there some reason to say this I am missing? It's not like all Sony releases are BD-Rs now, just some they don't think will sell.

Finally... At this point, can we just release a 4K UHD disc while we're at it?

Few people seem to admire this grand biopic. I'm one of them. Been waiting for this announcement for quite a while.

I actually don't like it much but I love everything else Michael Mann so I feel like I have to own it anyway.

Yeah, I do that (buy films I'm not over the moon about) when it's a filmmaker I deeply admire.

It would be nice if it were both cuts.

I'm in between. I kind of liked it but not really enough to make it a definite buy but the fact that it will fit nicely next to all the other Mann BDs I own will make a nice tie-breaker if I ever see it at an attractive price.

Not a bd-r. It's a special edition with Mann's participation.

Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors, but this is one of his lesser films imo.

Will Smith was badly miscast.

My real problem with Ali was a script that seemed all over the map with no narrative cohesion. I thought Smith was fine in the title role, but it's definitely weaker Mann.

As I own all his other films on blu, it's still a must have to complete my collection...unless pigs fly and he wants to release The Keep.

Glad to hear. Hoping for both cuts as I never got around to getting/viewing the extended cut.

From a Mann interview awhile ago he was working on a new cut, so I'm thinking this is a new cut. I thought the theatrical was slightly better, but I loved that one deleted scene from the trailer that was put back in. There are still a bunch of things in the trailer not in the either cuts of the movie.

Still, a new cut won't dramatically change the movie. I like Ali a lot, but its near the bottom of the pile of Mann films for me. I like that its not your typical biopic, but its a mixed bag.

I love how it opens with a montage and musical melody, but with time evenly split between Ali and Malcom X in the first hour, its hard to gauge who the film is really about. The second hour is just amazing, then the last 45 the grinds to a standstill leading up to the rumble in the jungle.

But the one thing that turns me off about Ali (the film) is that I'm not a fan of boxing or Ali himself. But other than those criticisms, its so amazingly directed and the acting across the board by everyone is amazing. I love Mann's early experimenting with digital cameras. One of my favorite Michael Mann scenes ever is when Ali is riding the subway trains at night when its snowing.

I'm a huge fan of Mann, and I like Ali, but I'd love it if it were only shorter. For me, the narrative meandered a bit once it got to Africa.
