Question Need info on Surge Protection!

I just recently bought the Sony KDL-40V2500 series lcd and I need a new surge protector. I am looking for one that is definetely under one hundred dollars and I don't really know what I should be looking for. I know that surge protectors can clean up ground signal for improved sound and picture quality and I am also looking for protection of my equipment. Is there a surge protector that any of you out there would recommend? Thanks a bunch.

I have a Monster for about $80, but I will be honest - I have never had any surges destroy any of my equipment since I have had HT ( around 10 years ). It is rare that anything causes a surge strong enough to hurt your equipment, unless your in Florida ( lightning capital ) LOL. I have used $20 ones and never had any problems ever. Not saying it cant though.

Get a good surge protector as a minimum. I don't think you "need" a power cleaner but the piece of mind for myself is great.

I live in California where brownouts are fairly common. This means they switch off whole grids when power is needed. On top of this are the blackouts. I have gone through the whole grid going down and then back up within a minute. It's weird seeing your blocks power off and the block next to you unaffected. I also live in a condo.

This company sells a number of different models. It will at least introduce you to what's out there.

This one sounds interesting(keep in mind it went through the mind of a marketer):
PureAV™ HDTV Power Conditioner PFHD
http://catalog.belkin.com/PureAV_det...duct_Id=187082

The MSRP is 150.00. A google search lowers it to 60 dollars. So don't be too intimidated by their prices. Shop around, read more comments and decide what's right for you.

I prefer Furman...an audiophile grade power conditioner. An entry-level 7 outlet unit will set you back about $379. Sure, you can use a $20 power strip but I think line conditioners do make a difference.

YMMV. Just my opinion.

Get a UPS. I have every piece of electronics on a UPS. It's especially important for RP sets with a bulb since the bulb needs to cool down properly and if the TV loses power it can't do that. There are power surges and brownouts that occur in my area every day, those can wreak havoc with electrical components and I haven't had any problems since I started making sure all my electrical components were connected to a UPS last century.

Many power supplies for HD players are switch mode. That means you turn 90 ~ 250v AC to DC this is then switched on and off at a high frequency - then turned back to DC (simplified explanation). This process is electrically VERY noisy, however with a good design on the low voltage side this is totally filtered out, but any noise down the mains is to a great extent filtered out and would be drowned out if it's still there. So noise filters are no use in these situations.

Surge suppressors are totally different. Most are a Varistor (a single disc like component like a small coin) that act as a short once the voltage exceeds a preset voltage. These have a limited use for such things as lightening strikes as their response is slower than the spike caused by the lightening bolt, that is where some UPS's come into their own, however UPS's have their own issues (I have removed a UPS off a mini computer as it was causing more problems than it was supposed to prevent), basically you are between a rock and a hard place.

Normally the weakest link is a TV aerial (doesn't need to be an external Aeriel to generate a decent jolt). This can then travel through other components and destroy on the way through.

The moral of the story - many domestic surge protectors are the same be it $10 or $150, but the badge can be quite expensive. They may not help but won't hurt.

ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS.

I was looking into get a Panamax Power line conditioner and surge protector. The good news about something like is that they will warrenty all of your equipment if something did happen.

As far as protecting against lightning, I would suggest looking at an APC ups. I haven't looked recently but they have typically always had a guarantee that says they will replace your equipment if it fails to protect it. They have been the standard in the pc world for years and have a good reputation. They probably have just surge protectors but a ups is nice to have and can still be had for less than $100.

Default Monster Power Cleaning AC Distribution

Is it actually worth it to invest in a power cleaning powerbar for my newly purchased LCD flatscreen or would it be just as good to get a surge protecting powerbar? and would anyone know a site to get a cheaper power cleaning powerbar thats not at the ridiculous monster prices??
thanks in advance

I am sure opinions will vary on this, but yes power conditioning is definately worth having. The difference is not huge by any means, but it is noticable most of the time.

Power conditioning provides surge protection, but the main benefit is that they actually "clean" the power that goes to your electronics. An example I always used was when I was a kid, whenever my mom ran the vacuum the TV got all screwed up with static interference, because the vacuum was "dirtying" the power. Power conditioners prevent this type of thing. (Most of you are probably too young to remember that

Typically in TV's it results in better color saturation, as well as less video noise from various sources. (electric wires, microwaves, etc, etc) Another variable is how old your current electrical system is (house wiring). The older the house is the more you will benefit.

The question is how much do you want to spend on it? I agree that the prices are often ridiculous, but I don't know of a cheaper way to get it. Panamax, Richard Grey, and various other companies make excellent pieces.

"Note: Panamax Audio Video products purchased through auction sites "Do Not" have a valid warranty."

Sounds like what happened to my PS3. Careful who and what you buy on eBay.
