While I haven't been able to bring myself to pay $30 for Gulliver either to complete my collection, I do want to point out there are 3 stop motion sequences in the film. That said, only the alligator fight has any real interest. DVD Drive-in has some interesting info about what happened with this film in their review.

It's certainly a fair debate to discuss where GWANGI ranks in Ray Harryhausen's filmography, overall. But I will say, the stop motion in this film surpasses his efforts in the films you mentioned. The sequence where the cowboys lasso GWANGI while on horseback, and attempt to control him, still holds up amazingly well today, and I imagine would have been jaw-dropping in 1969 for how real it looked. It's definitely one of my favorite Harryhausen's, right up there with 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD and JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, even though it's not nearly as celebrated as those films are. |
