Hey everyone,
Once again I am looking at getting a reciever to enjoy my blu-ray movies a little more than my old 5.1 reciever (which supports DD and DTS but not the new codecs). I dont have a bunch of money and am looking at the Sony STR-DG720, which should support LPCM that my PS3 sends out anyways (correct?). My question is that I had purchased an older reciever a couple years back from sony, which came with speakers. The label on these speakers say that they have an Impedance of 6ohms, however I see on the back of the reciever I plan to buy that it supports 8-12ohms (from memory). Is it safe to run these speakers on this reciever? Or wait till I can buy new speakers at the same time? |

id be more concerned about him using 4ohm rated speakers on a 8ohm rated receiver. now THATs a workout. and a firehazard if it doesnt shut down properly. |

Impedance is not a constant thing. It varies quite a bit with frequency. The impedance of an 8 ohm speaker can go up to 40 or go down below 5. Most high-end receivers should handle loads above 6 ohm without difficulty. However, I would hesitate to use a receiver with 4 ohm speakers. That is one reason we have separate amplifiers that can handle low impedance speakers. Please read the thread on Impedance & Sensitivty of a Speaker. It has sticky under Speaker Discussion.

From an amplifiers point of view, there's nothing difficult about a 12 ohm load.
It is reactive (capacitive and inductive) and low impedance loads that are the problem. Receivers often have 4 ohm settings, but these generally don't increase the low-impedance drive capability, they just limit the voltage that can be generated. The 4 ohm setting usually more than halves the max power. Nick |
