What do you define as "cool enough?" It's big and has a pretty decent picture. Some would the size alone is cool.

I was considering the 61" DLP at one point before the wife put a stop to a TV that size.

I have a 2005 vintage 52" Mitsubishi DLP and at the time it was top of the line projection tech. It looks bland now in comparison to my Sony SXRD. I hear that DLP is still one of the better choices for front projection. I will not be buying another DLP given todays choices.

Is the new Mitsubishi laser using a DLP chip? That looks interesting.

I bought and still have the first Samsung 50" DLP back in 2002 as well as two other ones since. The PQ is great on them and you can't beat the price now for a 61".

Unhappy SXRD is dead too

DLP may look pretty good (or may have when it first came out), but now -- thin is in.

2 Years ago the SXRD looked the best of any display out there and I was happy with it. But now I really don't like the washed out blacks (really greys) and I can see auto-iris at work sometimes which increases the dynamic constrast to 15,000:1. When I notice it, it is annoying. Rear projectors also have poor off-axis viewing and cannot tolerate a lot of light in the room. Besides all this they are big and bulky.

Like most people, I think that the compact size is very appealing.

And plasma is a superior picture now with all of its improvements.

Now I 'm thinking of getting a plasma (on order - in 6 or 7 weeks), but have to get rid of the albatross of the 60" RPTV that nobody wants. It may be hard to even give it away!

Oh well, live and learn.

DLP is the only current technology that doesn't yellow with age. LCD projos have a polarizer. That little item is one of the few things in LCDs that cannot be made organically and because of this, at approx' the 1800 hr mark, they start to get progressively more yellow. The lamp has nothing to do with it. You need to remember that LCD was made for data projection but because the things were so damn cheap, people wanted them for home theater. Not wanting to lose money on a new growing market, those manufacturers began selling them as such.

DLP used to produce horrendous rainbow effects, if you moved your eyes over the screen while watching. You'd see a faint RGB strip. You don't see that now unless it's a very cheap DLP, or you look directly at the lens and move your eyes. DLP pops like crazy. Don't rule it out!!!

Shouldn't the tv purchase be about picture quality and not fashion? I'll take my "outdated" Sony 60A3000 sxrd at the price I paid for it over anything else in it's size range. Why would I care how "cool" it looks when it is off, it is all about the picture quality.

some people might prefer not having a vulgar looking tv in the middle of their living room. some people do use the living room for things other than just watching movies.

if you have a separate media/tv room then more power to you as that's the best way to do it.

I love my DLP. It's an LED DLP, so theoretically, the tv should fall apart before the bulb burns out. It's 1080P, 4 hdmi inputs, PC input, even an input for a device that will allow you to display 3D (though I've never used that.)

The picture quality is excellent. I've owned several lcd's the past several years, and recently helped my mother select a plasma; and the picture quality on my DLP is better than any of them. And all for under $1500. You just aren't going to get the same features and picture quality and size from a lcd or plasma for anywhere near that price.

My 56" dlp is only 10.5 inches deep and actually has a frame so that it could be wall mounted if you truly wanted to. I challenge anyone to find a lcd or plasma that is any more shallow than 10.5 inches once you include the stand, so they only way you gain space with an lcd or plasma is to wall mount.

In the end, when you choose plasma or lcd over DLP, you are paying at least an $800 premium for aesthetics and something that looks sleek.

I actually have my 60" sxrd in my living room sitting on a very nice audio rack. I don't think it looks vulgar but to each his own. I am more concerned with image quality, and for the size/price flat panels are not there.

I previewed my 1080p DLP against 1080p LCD's and Plasmas and the LCD's were not even close to the Picture Quality, the 1080p Plasmas were about the same. For the Price Premium to get the Plasma I went ahead and bought the DLP.

BTW - Best Buy and HHGregg will both have a 60" 1080p DLP Mitsubishi for $999.99 on Black Friday. Believe me you will not find a better Picture for that size for even twice the money.

DLP is getting replaced by the Laser TV's by Mitsubishi. DLP is a very good technology as most of the High Def Projectors people are using DLP.

BTW, is that GSP?

I think DLP is a great technology.
The DMD chip with the mirros is a good concept. It individual mirrors can be tightly packed together so when the image is the projected you get less window screen look than other technologies.
No burn in with DLPs
I believe there will always be a market for DLPs
For someone who dosent need that thin in look. MY 56 inch DLP is only 14 inches wide. I also have a plasma on a base that is like 12 inches. So unless planning to hang it on a wall there seems no difference to me as far as stand space.
The price of a DLP will always be a good selling point. I purchased my 56 inch for the same price i could have bought a 46 inch sony LCD.
I also saw and add for the 1080p 60 inch mitz DLP for 999. Can you buy a 60 inch plasma or flat lcd 1080p for the same price?

So then why not buy a projector. If you have a tv hanging on the wall you have a vulgar object hanging on the wall. I think its funny how 10 years ago a console tv could be a piece of furniture. Now a HDTV is a vulgar object.
