So took my new bdp-s300 out of the box. First movie worked fine. Second movie, half way through the movie froze and no functions were working. Wouldnt read remote functions nor would the buttons work on the player itself. Had to unplug it to restart and it seems fine. Anyone else have this problem?

No, not yet. Did you play the movie again to see if it froze in the same spot? Was it a new movie, rented movie?
Just trying to determine if it is the player or bad disc that caused your problem. |

I recently got my firstBD player, the Sony BDP300.
My first 4 BD's played were the Planet Earth Series that I got as a gift. No problems whatsoever. Incredible picture! Since then I have had 3 titles rented from Netflix and all 3 had various skips, freezes, would go back to the very beginning. I carefully checked for dirty or scatched disks and cleaned them with the proper techniques but still had freezeups etc. Replayed one of my Planet Earth BD's and all was ine. None of the Netfix disks seemed to be scratched, just smudgy, and with little spots scattered around the surface which did not clean off. My call to a Sony senior tech guy on their hotline was answered that they have recv'd quite a few calls from Netflix customers having issues like mine and are working out a solution with NetFlix. My question is do you all think that there could be a problem with my player in particular, or a problem with the players design, or BD disks too sensitive or what? All the problems seem to happen at some critical part of the movie. I'm trying to impress the misses that all that $$ spent on the new HDTV and BD player were worth it and then BLAM the darn thing freezes up!! ANY help or insights would be welcomed either by private email or on this forum. Tonite I've got a Netflix copy of Apocolypto and am having a few folks over to watch it and if it screws up I'm seriuosly thinking of returning this player and sticking to regular DVD's for now. Thanks in advance!! |

I'm guessing and this is just a guess; that it's netflix as most people do not take care of the discs when they are not their own. I don't know about you but I had several problems with discs skipping with standard deff. dvd's from netflix that's why I cancelled my account with them.

I have a PS3 as my player and also use Netflix. I have experienced freezes only about 3 movies so far (out of about 25), the worst one being the Descent where it would freeze near the beginning and I'd have to restart from the main menu. This may have been due to older firmware, as I rented it around the time of release and the PS3 hadn't had many firmware updates at the time.
The others were just small hiccups that cleared by fast-forwarding a bit. Maybe the PS3 has better error-correction than standalones? I have never had a problem with the brand-new movies I buy. |

So far all the netflix movies I have rented have been ok, I always clean them before I play them. Always fingerprints on them. I use eyeglass cleaner.

I too had problems with regular DVD's from Netflix over the years but never like 3 outa 3 with problems like I've had with the BD's. I'm hoping its not my player!

Both movies were brand new. And thinking about it now, the first movie we watched skipped at a certain point as well, but not as notciable as freezin and completely losing function of device.

Wow didnt think about taking it back. Maybe that isnt an option and that is the reason for me asking on this forum. Is this a reaccuring problem with other players? And to continue, since no one is taking note to the lack of function.
The PLAYER FROZE.....Couldnt turn it off, remote did not work no buttons worked. It was frozen with power on absolutely no functions. All disks were brand new. But the PLAYER FROZE. Had to unplug it to unfreeze it and it finished playing the movie. So netflix, not the problem. Scratched movie not the problem. |

Played Apocolypto from Netflix today. First really carefully cleaned it w/ eyeglass cleaner and soft wipe dry, and it played with only one second or two freeze about a 1/3rd in, kept playing on its own after that with no problems! WHEW! as I had some folks over to watch the new setup and great movie.
I can live with that. PQ was really good on the 52"XBR2.. SQ equally impressive... interesting featurette on it as well.... So the jury is still kinda out on this, I'll hang onto it and see how it does..... I'll keep ya'll posted. |

OK, here's my take:
Rented discs from NetFlix or Blockbuster or whatever are always going to be more prone to cause maladies with HD players in particular. Why? People are slobs!! They will not take good care of a rented disc simply because it's not their disc to own. Fact is, such slobs' personal DVD/BD/HD-DUD collections (with 99.99% certainty) are not the most immaculate looking discs on the Earth (smudges, scratches, you name it). Hence, that is why you all with HD players of any kind are having so many issues with rented discs. And yes, BDs are more physically sensitive than standard DVDs by nature. And folks, it goes without saying...take better care of your discs!!!! Let's all go back to Disc Handling 101: Since I am right-handed, I'll give you my demonstration accordingly. When removing the disc out of the storage case, put your right (pointer) finger on the "push down" button, while using your left thumb and left middle finger to grab the disc by the edges of the disc. Guide the disc to your player using your left hand (with the left thumb and left middle finger still holding the disc by the edges) and carefully place the disc in the disc tray. When your done with playing the disc and you ejected it out of the player, use your good ol' left thumb and left middle finger again to grab the disc BY THE EDGES. Guide the disc left-handed to it's storage case and use your right fingers to snap the disc back into place. NEVER......EVER..........touch the surface of the disc!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, don't leave these puppies laying around outside of their cases!!!!!!!!!!! They are pretty damn expensive to be so careless with. Put the discs away...right away. This way, I NEVER have to use ANY cleaner...PERIOD....on any of my discs. This way, I never have to sit watching a movie and not have to recite "Hail Mary" throughout the whole experience hoping and praying that the disc won't freeze up, flub up, whatever!! I have a Sony BDP-S300, and I am happy to report no problems with any discs, BDs or standard DVDs. I NEVER rent movies -- I buy movies and programming on BDs/DVDs RELIGIOUSLY. If you were to come to my home and see the over 1100 discs that I own, you would be FLOORED as to how immaculate they all look (short of any manufacturing tiny defects). Be kind to your discs, and they'll be kind to you. Jodi |

OK.....back to my orginal question.
Has anyone else have had their sony BDP-S300 freeze? Not in the sense of picture freeze. I mean the unit itself looses all function and no button on the player or remote will work. To restart the unit I had to unplug the unit from its power source. Got It? Both BD's were brand new out of box. I can not return item and Yes I can have it serviced. Or if someone actually provides me with a Yes this has been deemed a common occurence. I will sell my unit. |

Wordmonkey,
Did this freeze up happen more than once? Also what were you playing at the time? I'd say if it only happenned one time just keep an eye open for any future problems. |

This BD was brand new, just purchased retail from Amazon. I watched about 1/2 of the movie and had to run some errands. So I turned off the S300 and left the disc in it (even if I hadn't turned it off, it shuts off automatically in less than 30 minutes). When I came home a few hours later, I fired up the player and it FROZE on "Power On". The remote wouldn't work at all. However, I pressed the eject button on the player itself and the tray popped right out. So I am hoping this was just a random fluke. Just out of curiosity, does anyone else's S300 take about 30-45 seconds to start up when you first power it on? It won't even let me into the disc tray. |
