Default HDTV/DVD player question

Today my sister bought an offbrand 19 in LCD tv from walmart to replace her old (and I mean oldddddddddd) tv in her bedroom. She got this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10629536 at walmart for Black Friday, it's 720p with no HDMI port.

Anyway, I was going to grab her a cheap dvd player for xmas to go with it, and I have a question. Walmart has a 720p/1080i upscaling player for like $40 that I was going to grab her, but I was wondering if it was worthwhile without an HDMI port on the tv. They can't output 720p+ without HDMI, right?

Would I be better off just getting her a non-upconverting progressive scan player?

I read something about 720p TV's without HDMI outputting dvd's at like 576p or something, but it didn't say whether or not that was with an upconverting player

I'm not the best with home theater stuff. I have a 1080p LCD with HDMI support so I've never had to worry about it.

I think as long as it has component inputs, it can output 720p, up to 1080i I believe. Should look pretty decent as well.

You're fine with component (red, green, blue) connections. They pass up to 1080p, but most sets won't accept 1080p (movies) over component due to HDCP restrictions. No need to be concerned with this, though. They're fine for 720p/1080i signals.

Id get the Bluray player.

Even though her TV is way to small to enjoy the full benefit (unless she sits REALLY close), one day she may upgrade the TV and will already have the bluray player to go with it.
