Default Direct TV

I have had Direct TV for about 7 months now and so far have been happy w/ them. Now I want to upgrade to a HD DVR, but not willing to pay $200. Does anyone know if Direct TV has promos for existing customer to upgrade to a DVR that come around? Thanks

Consider a separate DVR. The new DirecTV DVR models don't have OTA antenna inputs, as far as I can tell. I use my HR20 for recording OTA sports and other programming frequently.

Tell them your thinking of swithing to the Dish network (since they give HDDVRs for free), and asked to be transferred to the cutomer retention ext. You can prolly get it for $50-100 or maybe less!!!

Sounds like a plan, I will give it a try. Has anyone done this?

When i was thinking of getting my mom an HD-DVR last month they were only $99 ($199 with $100 rebate). And i was thinking of trying this to maybe get them down to $50, because her contract ends in February, perfect time to threaten to cancel and move to Dish Network So i'll try this soon and get back

First call them up and see what they offer you for switching to a HD DVR. You would have more leverage if you were near the end of your contract. Years ago I got boatloads of free upgrades from them when I threatened to quit for cable. Make up some story that your local cable provider is offering free a HD DVR to switch and see if they will match. It does depend a little on the luck of the draw and what CSR you get on the phone.

I think its starts at $200 (maybe $300) and then goes down each month.

For example: 2 year contract - $200/24 = $8.33 a month.

You had service for 7 months. $200-($8.33*7) = $141 termination fee.

It worked. I called DTV asking how much $$$ to cancel. The customer service rep asked why I wanted to cancel, told her I needed a DVR and Dish was offering free ones. That's all it took, they are sending it out in 2 weeks for free and free install.
