Question Need help with Direct TV equipment...

First of all, let me say thank you for anyone who tries to help me out.

I just helped my mother-in-law pick out a new panny 58' plasma tv. She currently has some 27" old school tube tv connected to an SD direct tv receiver and dish. She asked me to help her find a place to buy everything she needs to go HD. The thing is I don't know anything about Direct TV and don't know what she needs since I use my cable company for hd.

So I need to know exactly everything that I need to order. I just checked out newegg and saw that they had a few things but I don't what to buy.

As far as I know she needs an hd dish and receiver.

She also wants to connect at least two tv's to the dish.

Again, thank you for any assistance!

Update: I just found this link. Would this be everything that she would need?

DIRECTV HD receiver— model HR20 or H20
5-LNB satellite dish
B-Band Converter module

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...assetId=900036

Have her call DirecTv and tell them she wishes to upgrade to HD and they will come out an install the new dish and MAY also give her 1 HD receiver free of charge. I would look around satelliteguys.us for ALL the satellite info you could ever need.....ever :-)

Keep in mind that no matter WHERE you get the equipment it is owned by them and you are merely leasing it, the upgrade will also require a contract.

Its probably best that she goes through Directv themselves, as she can pick up the hd receiver at $99 a piece or the hddvr which is $199 a piece. They will then install everything including a new dish for free.

Thumbs up

I highly recommend calling either directv and or dish network to get everything u need and installed 1800 directv or directv.com for HD she will need 3 OR 5 LNB (low Noise Blocker) plus she will need an hd receiver, I highly recommend getting the tivo add on to that just ask for the HD DVR PACKAGE and they will tell u what u need

Neither of those companies currently offer a Tivo branded device...they do both offer an HD-DVR though. The old HD Tivo devices that DirecTv offered briefly and at a HUGE premium no longer receive the HD feeds since they have been changed from mpeg2 to mpeg4.

I understand what you are getting at but someone may call and want a "Tivo or nothing" and not understand that it is a brand name and not the actual recording technology.

The thing is that she doesn't want to rent the equipment from directtv. She just wants to pay for her monthly service like she does now.

Would any of these items work for her?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ption=directtv

I'm thinking:

Receiver:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-008-_-Product

Receiver with DVR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-015-_-Product

Dish:
not sure

I don't know anything about dvr's. Would the dvr that I have listed work just like a tivo? Also, how much does the dvr service cost?

Both models you linked to on Newegg are DVR's... If the model# starts with a HR it's a DVR and if it's just an H that's a standard receiver... DVR and TiVo operate the same way, but DirecTV makes their own versions and can't call it a TiVo... $170-$190 is about how much a HD-DVR costs but she may be able to pay only $99 if upgrading through DirecTV... They will also give her the dish she needs for free... Also those B-Band converters you listed in your first post will come in the box with the receiver...

As for paying monthy I believe it's $10 for the first receiver and $5 each additional one...

Both of thoes HD DVR's would work, but still keep in mind that you lease the receivers from DTV for $5.99 a month per receiver. No way around that. The DVR service is $5.99 a month, regardless of the number of receivers you have. The monthly charge for HD service is $10, again regardless of the number of receivers you have.

Like others have mentioned, the best bet is to call DTV and ask about new subscriber specials. That always have some offer, but make sure you ask for two lines connected to the receiver, giving you the ability to tape one channel while recording another.

You can always walk into Best Buy and pick up the Direct TV receiver that you would like.

My suggestion is to call Direct TV up and see what they can offer you as a new customer.

They will add the cost to her monthly bill like others have said. At the point she decides to end her service with DirecTv she will be sent empty boxes to send the receivers back in. Even if you search a site like ebay for the equipment it will more then likely be leased stuff that was never returned.

The best and easiest way is for her would be to call them and tell them what she wants and they will take care of the rest.

The problem with that is if the dish on the outside of the residence is not correct then you need to call DirecTv anyway to come replace it.

To the OP: Even in this case you do not OWN the equipment.

I will go over her house and look over her bill with her tonight. I think she's under the assumption that if you buy the box you don't have to pay a monthly fee for the box. I think that's what she's doing now but I'll have to see it with my own eyes.

For a receiver I mean't this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-005-_-Product

My original link was wrong.

Does anybody know what type of dish she would need? One one of them listed here work?

You do not really "Buy" DirecTV equipment. The charges you pay upfront are essentially depreciation of the device. In most cases, your best bet is to call DirecTV or talk with someone at an authorized dealer (or better, do both and see who gives you the best deal). DirecTV's pricing structure is complicated, and there are several tiers of HD programming.

She will need a slimline or oval dish installed....calling DirecTv is going to still be your best option but i fear that point isn't getting through as you keep posting equipment, no offense intended just my view

you can always tried talking to them into getting one free hd receiver and pay for the 2nd? I for one, got HD access free for one year to compensate the $100 HD receiver fee. either way, just like everybody says, you dont own the boxes. Even if you buy them from Best buy, you need to activate the account with it and you still only leasing it. and the first $5 lease fee is waived. You start pay $5 for the 2nd, 3rd, etc etc receiver.

you need a lease a 3 LNB silm line dish for the HD contents for Directv

What I would recommend is check when is her paln is over and start as new customer....becacuse she can get installation free and the first box free... and the lease fee is waived and HD is another $10 addition to what ever plan she pick....

1. No matter where you "buy" a new DirecTV receiver, it will still be leased.

2. You will need a 5-LNB dish with the new MPEG-4 programming (they always install this for free with new HD service or an "upgrade" from the old HR10-250 to an HR2x DVR).

Unless they have changed their satellite dish and setup, you will need a multi-switch and two receivers to connect the dish to two separate receivers in two different rooms. DirecTV charges too much for the multi-switch. I bought mine from Amazon. I have my dish connected to four independent receivers in different rooms. DirecTV upgraded my dish free of charge, but they charge about $5 more per month for each additional receiver. Of course, programming such as HBO, Showtime, Cinemax are extra.
