oh yeah, that is cool for the really poor kids. my sister did a really nice thing for my 1 year old nephews birthday last year and I always tell people about it because I thought it was awesome and I was so moved by it:

She lives in India and she and her husband agreed that paying money for their over privileged friends and their kids to come over and stuff their faces and give the kid expensive gifts he doesn't really need was a waste. Instead of that, they took the funds and worked with a local orphanage and arranged the party at a local rental hall.

The kids came over and the entire place was decorated, they had clowns and disney characters, they had games and food and cake for all the kids and when the orphans left they each got a present to take home. I love telling people about it because I think more people might get motivated by her idea.

Dood, that's awesome! My wife is a SPED teacher (special education) and we do that as well. Most of these kids she has, both parents are in jail and they have no one to give them hope or a sense of direction.

Layoffs around Christmas aren't really all that uncommon.

Sad and unfortunate, but not uncommon.

Wow! 16,000 is a lot!!! I know it always happens right before or after christmas time, but this time some big companies are involved with an even bigger number of layoffs. Our local company Hawaiian Telcom is letting go of 100 employees as they just filed for bankruptcy this week. Doesn't sound like a lot of people, but compared to it's workforce it is!

To Teabaggins- That was really really nice of her! Not enough people have the heart to do something like this!

The wife and I are currently picking the end of year donations which usually come out of my bonus. Sea Shepherd is on top of the list this year.

Don't forget about your local food banks. People often overlook those organizations. A lot of our local area food banks are closing because nobody is contributing to them and people who rely on their services are really hurting. During my weekly grocery shopping, I look for the B1G1 sales on food items and get things that I can donate to them. Any little bit helps them out.

Not sure when or where this is all going to end . . .

In the past 2 years I have gotten out of a pickle or two. Now i'm quite happy in my job and this economy crap happens. It sucks for everyone.

As long as I don't lose my job i'm happy to carry on buying blu's as if nothing is happening.

Sorry for those affected this week.. Damn its a crazy stupid world we live in.

That's a nice story. It reminds me of when I was a teenager and two friends and I used to do volunteer visits at a nursing home. At Christmas time that year, we spent weeks going around to different retailers asking them to donate items that we could give as gifts. We collected enough things to give every single resident at least one wrapped item. Nice items they could really use like clothing and throw blankets, instead of the toothpaste and deodorant type gifts so many church youth groups take to nursing homes at Christmas time(those items are pretty useless as they are provided to them by law, and how would you feel getting a tube of toothpaste for Christmas?)

I'm too old and busy to go all out like that any more, but every year I still try to buy a couple of children's coats and drop them off at Catholic Social Services this time of year.

One of the oldest papers in the America, Colorado's Rocky Mountain News, is up for sale.

If there is no buyer in the next four to six weeks, the paper says it may fold!

Credit Suisse announced Thursday that they are going to cut 5,300 jobs - or about 11% of its global workforce.

My credit card bill was almost a grand for November. Most of that was on Christmas stuff. Not a single gift bought yet! Linens and Things going out of business prompted me to buy a bunch of stuff. Plus I spent over $400 on a new professional Santa suit!

Usually December is my big spending month. Even so, I plan to pull back the reins and slow down December spending to essentials.

If you are fairly secure in your job as I am, thank the Lord, this is the time to spend. Deals haven't been this good in 16 years.

God speed to all those in need of work.

Official November figures in, 533,000 people were fired or made redundant over the month in the US. That's pretty sad, I really hope those people can find work to support their families.
