I bought the Japanese version of "The Dark Knight" specifically because I wanted to watch it with my Japanese wife, who appreciates the Japanese subtitles. The packaging lists Japanese subtitles but I can't get it to display on my U.S.-version PS3. In fact, all the menus display in English and of the 20 or so subtitle languages listed, Japanese is not one of them. This leads me to believe that although both the U.S. and Japan are in Region A (so the disc plays on hardware from either country), the Dark Knight disc displays differently depending on the hardware. In other words, perhaps if I played the disc on a Japanese-version PS3, the player by default would access the Japanese menus, subtitles, etc. and display those items. But because I'm using a U.S. PS3, it's only displaying the options intended for the U.S. market. Does anyone know how I can get the Japanese subtitles to display properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You have to set the BD Menu option of the PS3 to Japanese, that way it will start up with Japanese menus and allow the subtitles to be selected.
Incidentally, this is because Warner often just presses the exact same disc for all regions. The US disc is exactly the same and will also start up with Japanese menus. Some MGM discs, non-US Universal discs, and UK Disney discs (like Lost) also do this, or at least have Japanese subtitles while the US version doesn't. Try checking out this thread to see which ones have them: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1155731 |

Many thanks. I followed your instructions, and everything now works as it's supposed to. The only negative is that I overspent on the Japanese version when I could have just gotten the U.S. one. I'll do my homework next time!

Hi. I just received an LG blu ray player as a gift and I tried playing my Japanese blu ray and it was working fine for a few minutes then it began skipping. What can I do to fix this?

I live in the US, and just bought a Sonyblu-ray disc/DVD player BDP-S185/BX18. My brother, who lives in Japan, recorded a Japanese program for me on his Panasonic blu-ray player on a Sharp Corporation Blu-Ray disc BD-RE for video. It will not play on my player! He said that it plays on his player, as well as his neighbor's player, which is also a Panasonic. I thought that for blu-ray, the region for Japan and the US are the same. Why won't the disc play on my machine? Is it a Sony vs Panasonic thing? Or something else?

I believe the US and Canada have the same region code, every where else it is different region coding. not sure if when the program was recorded in Japan it was automatically region encoded. That's all I can think of, or perhaps your player is specific to what type of blu ray discs it plays. As my dvd recorder wil not play jpeg files recorded onto a dvd, but my Panasonic blu ray player will. Check your instruction booklet and if all else fails call up the manufacturer.

Stuff recorded on JP Blu-ray recorders might not always work on US players. They work fine on the PS3, though. They also play on my Oppo, but program titles from the disc menu will be in gibberish if they have Japanese characters, and Japanese closed captions can't be displayed on the Oppo (but they can on a PS3).
It can also depend on the type of BD-R used. My Oppo wouldn't play LTH BD-Rs until after a firmware upgrade. I think BD-REs are usually fine, though... |

As it turns out, it plays on my brother's panasonic, but it was actually recorded on his next-door neighbor's Sharp Aquos BDH50.

I only buy blu-rays in the US, or region free blu-rays from the UK. Region free Blu-rays from other countries, I don't bother, nor worry about importing because they're too expensive. Money is not the issue, it's just I'm only willing to pay up to a certain amount of money for a blu-ray. I know there a people who will pay an arm, leg, and a foot to import blu-rays from all over the world, but not me. I don't want the blu-ray that bad!
