Default Will your imports play in your current player?

Although a large portion of all Blu-ray movies are region free (when this is written about two-thirds of all Blu-ray movies are region free) below is a map of the official regions.

Region A: America, Japan, Korea, South East Asia
Region B: Greenland, Europa, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand
Region C: China, India, Russia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Central, and South Asia.

The graph above clarifies that you do not need to worry about coding-restrictions if you live in the US and want to import from Japan, South Korea, the Americas etc. Or, if you live in a European country and wish to import from another European country, Australia, etc. Obviously if you live in region A country and want to import from a region-B country for example then you have to research the specs of the your chosen disc and make sure that it is region-free, etc.

Also you must keep in mind that even though the HD content on your region-free disc is accessible (since it is not coded) if you purchase a disc from Zone A to play in a Zone B manufactured player/PS3 if the extras on the disc are not in HD but in standard-def you won't be able to access them (for now).

Zone B players/PS3 will play perfectly PAL standard-def extras, but not NTSC standard-extras.

Zone A players will play perfectly NTSC standard-def extras but not PAL standard-def extras from Zone B discs, etc.

Is this really true? I dunno about playing BDs with 576i/p content on a US PS3, but I thought just about all SD extras for PAL territories were 480i/p since I remember some people complaining about 480i/p content when the DVDs were 576i/p. And extras on Warner discs are obviously not 576i/p since they use the same encode worldwide.

When I want to find out Region A (U.S.) releases if they are region free, I check with the studio/ distributor and their likeliness to be region free, or I go check out these very useful websites....

www.axelmusic.com
http://regionfreemovies.com

Shame my Sony Blu Ray is not Region Free. My brother won a competition in Australia and got a Sony Blu Ray BDP-550. So if I don't want Region B Blu Rays as the classification codes are ruining the covers, I try to get those that are Region Free from the U.S.

All PS3's in the world play 480p/480i material. Most of Warners UK catalog titles are 480i/480p when viewing extras. Since they use the same master disc as the US.

The other way around though, no chance. PAL is locked out completely on region A players. The only PAL support you got is from the hard drive. So unless you find a way to copy the extras from the blu ray to the HDD your out of luck.

Not entirely true. If you have an LG BH 200 Combo player AND your TV accepts PAL signals you would be good to go as you can go into the menu and within minutes be watching a region B locked movie.

You can watch NTSC region free DVDs fine on a UK PS3 as all HD TVs support NTSC and PAL. If you do not have a HD screen then you need to check if it can accept other signals. So there should be no reason why ntsc SD features on blurays will not work on UK PS3's.

Hi, i managed to pick up a hardware modified Panasonic DMP-BD30 from a guy in Poland who modifys them himself and i hav'nt had a problem with any discs. I own both Zone A and Zone B discs and both play perfectly. Also loading the firmware into the machine does not interfere with the modification. I have not tried a Zone C yet because i dont own any but im sure that these will be no problem at all. I also own Zone Free discs and they play fine aswell.

The new OPPO BDP-83 for Region A will play all Region A & Region Free discs with PAL or NTSC content.

I ordered one on Saturday and can't wait for it to arrive. I also have an OPPO 981 for other Region DVDs.

Hopefully, despite OPPO's statements to the contrary, someone will finday a way to make Region B & C Blu-rays playable on the BDP-83.

If not, I hope films like Antonioni's RED DESERT and BFI's Pasoloni films won't be long for Region A.

Default Imports playing in your current player

I will tell you this that there are a few websites out there like amazon.co.uk and inetvideo that really do not give you a whole lot of information about the blu rays region code If' its 1, 2 3, so you need to be very careful because like with amazon.co.uk all they put for their information is pal for the blu-ray no region code so If you buy a blu-ray movie from them like this you need to be very cautious. With inetvideo they simply do not put any information about what region will the blu-ray's will play in.

Yeah, I have that site practically bookmarked and constantly use it--especially if I want to know about what imports are region-free and the like. Very helpful site.

Japan Wat?

Oh sure there're titles I do want to buy from Japan of which WILL work on my Blu-ray disc player. That's not the problem. The problem is my wallet!
That's why I'm so hesitant about importing from Japan, it's the pricing. Can anyone recommend to me the best Japanese e-tailers in terms of pricing and shipping? I might finally jump on it.
I'm not interested at all about anime. Just certain releases which have a superior release there.

I'm new to all this so go easy on me. I am looking for Crouching Tiger Blu Ray. Cheapest I found was on Renchi.com for like 27 bucks. It is listed as Region A. Will this movie play on my US PS3? This price is less than half of the cheapest price I found.

Never trust what Amazon lists when it comes to region info.
