I presume it's because the old version was released by Warner Brothers and featured a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This Anniversary version is being released by Fox and features a DTS HD-MA soundtrack. Different sound codec, so possibly a different film transfer too.

Without an announced remaster then the best you can expect is a new encode, not a brand new film transfer a la Heat. I bought the Fox euro edition of JFK for the ever so slightly better encode but if the people who compressed the new Heat are being let loose on LA Confidential (presuming it's a fresh encode) then they can keep it.

It comes from a deep desire to have our favorite films be improved upon with each successive release. I know, it's a fantasy in this day and age but there you have it.

Remaster or not, I highly recommend anyone who hasn't watched it yet to pick this up. It's not only one of the better films of the 90s, but one of my all-time favorites.

This release sounds like a catalog dump, if it hasn't been remastered.
