Default This could be very good news for Blu-Ray

I know this is not the best rule of thumb, but I'm going to quote someone from the HD Software Media News thread at AVS and once you read this I think you'll see why I did.

I'm quoting a well respected forumer from there who's referring to someone whose name I suspect needs no introduction.

Quote:
It should be remembered here that Stacey has tested the resolution of the Samsung player using his own VC-1 material, and had this to say: "For the record, when I play VC1 resolution test patterns and video on both HD DVD and BD (the same content) it looks virtually identical. If the NR is on, it may only be on for MPEG2."

I hope that there is an easy fix for the Samsung player, and that Samsung engineers simply made a stupid mistake, but this cannot be predicted with any certainty. Other problems with Faroudja chips have been very hard to track down and fix. Nor can it be said that the fix will somehow make the execrable software any better.
Keep in mind: Stacy Spears, who is being referred to in this post, is one of several people who has worked WITH Microsoft and makes no secret of his preference for their codecs.

I'm not trying to read into this too much, I found this tidbit to very interesting and something you all could chew on, if nothing else.

The Pioneer and Panasonic players can't get here soon enough.

Has anyone heard the rumor that the Pioneer might actually launch early in August?

So to make this clear,he's played this VC1 test disk on a Samsung player via HDMI, and it was indentical, the article seems to be implying that.

I've no problem with anyone having a preference for VC-1, it's a pretty awesome codec.

It is an awesome codec.

What I want to see happen ASAP is this:

Take a title like Training Day, which is considered a reference HD-DVD and do a shootout with it vs. the Blu-Ray version that's coming out...whenever.

Either do it on a fixed Samsung player or, depending on the timing, one of the other newer Blu-Ray players.

THAT is the kind of meaningful comparison we so sorely need, in general.

Yup, agreed.

Release date for Training Day Blu Ray is August 1st.

Warner already have a gorgeous VC-1 encode, the whole MPEG2 thing is a Sony thing, they'd be crazy to reencode to MPEG2.

I'm waiting for Training Day with baited breath, I tell ya.

Ok, so it would need to be a "fixed" Samsung as the player.

Well if it's a VC-1 encode, and this guy says his VC-1 test disk looks great on the Samsung, you don't need a fixed player at all...! Yeah, only reason we have MPEG2 BDs is Sony.

Fingers, toes, and anything else I can crossed man.

I've heard this rumor as well. I hope there is some truth to it.

Also, I sure would like to see H.264/AVC being used in the upcoming BD titles. To me, that would be awesome, plus we can compare on how it stacks up to VC-1.

I almost don't want that rumor to be true for one obvious reason: I don't want that player rushed out and I want that extra time to be used as much as possible to make it as amazing and future proof as possible.
