Video Business breaks down Black Friday sales figures
Posted Dec 12th 2007 3:51AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Industry, Blu-ray, HD DVD, Other formats, Players

For the statistics freaks out there, you're sure to love this one. After DisplaySearch churned out a plethora of data surrounding Black Friday sales in the HD realm, Video Business took the liberty of breaking it all down for easier digestion. Interestingly, some 600,000 DVD players were moved while only 57,000 high-definition players were sold during the week ending November 24th, but less shockingly, (cheaper) HD DVD players made up 62-percent of that 57K. Nevertheless, Blu-ray hardware grabbed 52-percent of the revenue, even though it sold substantially less units than HD DVD. On the software side, BD titles made up 72.6-percent of all high-definition movie purchases, while HD DVD claimed the other 27.4-percent. We know, numbers only say so much, but it doesn't really look like any recent trends shifted over the US' biggest shopping holiday of the year.

I think giving so many free movies out kinda hurts sales. They were giving like 10 to 12 movies free with the HD player and most people are gonna watch those, not run out and buy a ton of other movies.

thats the problem when you market to cheap people looking for deals .. they then go to the moives section and see almost 22+ for every movie, I mean its also the fact we well most of use appriciate the quality were getting and are willing to pay for it where as someone who got a 99$ hd-dud box doesnt see the value in paying for quality... Love that lol

And does this include Wally World numbers? They had the big PS3 + 10 Discs Secret Sale going. All I know is that when I went back there the next week the whole second display they had for Blu was all gone. I asked them if they had any leftover and they said that they almost all sold. You have to remember that this is in the middle of a swamp in NC and they only had 2 PS3s to sell in the first place. It's not like they gave away all of their discs with the 2 PS3s they sold. Either way, this report shows a very good Blu trend.

that is old news but none the less... I think it shows more people are using them as upconvert players rather than DUD players... just my guess

But that old news didn't give any information about players that were sold.

Blu sold less hardware (38%) yet sold ~73% software. hmmm... less hardware, more discs... doesn't that mean that the attach rate for Blu will go up? DUD's will have to invent a new FUD soon, coz attach rates aren't going look good for them anymore.

meaning PS3 is a blu player..... and HD DUD has recognised it when they counted it for the attach rate
