Default PS3 Blu-ray Settings for Yamaha RX-V663?

I just recently picked up a Yamaha RX-V663 A/V Receiver and I have the following questions...

1) What are the proper settings on the receiver in order for it to automatically switch to DolbyTruHD or DTS HD?

2) What are the proper settings on the PlayStation 3 in order for it to send the correct signal to the receiver?

I have gone through the settings and adjusted the HDMI audio out for Linear PCM and the Optical audio out to Bitstream. I also checked the audio settings and set it to automatic. The list includes all the 2ch frequencies all the 5ch frequencies and the 7ch frequencies.

Now I have the game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I was messing with the audio settings and noticed that I could select the Linear 7.1 ch setting. (It sounds AMAZING).

Of course on the front of the receiver it indicates which speakers are activated for the different modes. I would notice that when I was watching a trailer off the HDD it would switch to 2 ch stereo and when I would return to the XMB it would switch back to 7.1.

My one problem is whenever I play a Blu-Ray Movie that supports DolbyTruHD or DTS HD the Logos do not light up on the front of the receiver indicating that it's recieving the signal.

One other thing, I noticed on the list of audio frequencies supported by the receiver included DTS 5.1, but there was no option for a Dolby TruHD or DTS HD.

I'm I missing something or is Sony not telling us something?

It looks like you have everything set up correctly.

Some HD trailers are only in 2.0 or basic DD5.1. So no worries there.

In regards to the logos showing up on your Yammy, they will not. The PS3 is decoding them already and sending them to your receiver. So, when they get to the receiver, there is nothing for your receiver to do but send tem out the proper speaker channel.

Thank You, I thought the Ps3 was doing it. Don't get me wrong all my movies and games sound amazing now. I'm very proud in my purchase and I just needed to make sure I had everything right. I think I mentioned this and this is in reply to your post in regards to the trailers in 2.1 ch. Well the speaker indicaters on the right hand of the display screen switch between 2.1 ch and 5.1 ch and 7.1 ch. So I knew something was right.

Now as far as 7.1 is concerned should I even activate it in the options menu considering my system is still 5.1 (I plan on purchasing and 2 speakers later) or does it even matter?

I have this reciever too and I love it. When I get some money saved up(seriously realy will not be for a few months but the small yammys I have r good enough) my theatre will be complete. I paid more than I should have but I did get my money worth and do not regret. Sidenote...does this reciever upconvert video to 1080P? I get different info but my wii looks better thru the reciever.

Awesome, I'm glad more and more people are picking up the 663, It is a very affordable system for the technologies that are included. Now as far as speakers are concerned are you saying that you have some Yamaha Speakers? If you do, they do make some fairly decent speakers. So you should be fine for some time. When I purchased my 663 I purchased a Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 600 Series speaker system. Out of the box you get 1 Pro Center 600 + 4 Pro Monitor 600 + 1 ProSub 600. Thus making it a 5.1 speaker system, well since the 663 supports 7.1 later I will purchase two more pro monitors. Now as far as upconversion goes for the receiver, i'm not sure it does it, but I did notice that when I started up the the PS3 when the video showed up I noticed the image was running alot smoother and cleaner, so the 663 must be doing something with the HDMI Video.

the yammy speakers are small cheap speakers. I paid about 115 for them down from 320 at best buy. Im not complaining but I know better speakers would blow my mind. As for the better video, I am convinced that it does look better. Not light years better but enough to make the Wii games look smoother.

We are having a BBQ tonight so it's time to get the Dark Knight and Wall-E out and convince more people to get a 1080P TV and a Blu ray player( worked GREAT last superbowl party. 4 friends went out and bouht within 3 weeks.)

I do have a nice set up.

I just got the same receiver this past month and I must say it's amazing for the price. I also got them with Polk Audio speakers RM85 with a PSW111 Subwoofer. After hooking everything up, I was blown away with the sound quality it brings. Movies never sound so much better. Same thing goes for video games.

Make sure you turn off "Dynamic Range Control" under video settings... Its in automatic mode usually and reduces alot of the highs and lows in your system... It was crippling my sub and I thought I needed to buy another till I turned this off !

I think you want to turn off the 7.1 decoding on the ps3 since you only have a 5.1 system for now. When the system decodes 7.1 it is sending some sound to those speakers (which are not there yet) so you may be loosing some sound. Also set your receiver for straight mode since the ps3 does the decoding

This receiver does not upconvert to 1080p I think the rx-v863 does.

This receiver is really good for the decent price. I cant complain at all

Default PS3 Blu-Ray Settings

I have read multiple threads on this topic and still have a question concerning the Yamaha RX-V663. I have tried both settings; bitstream and PCM still getting the same result: no sound from the rear channels. The speaker icons also do not show up on my receiver. The most recent attempts were with Spiderman 3 and The Spirit, both 7.1. I have been troubleshooting this problem for at least a year now and have had no luck getting anything to work. I believe there must be a setting on my receiver I have missed, but am not sure what that could be. Can anyone assist?

First of all, set the PS3 audio output to PCM via HDMI. The only time you should use bitstream is when you're sending your audio via optical cable. Second, make sure your rear speakers are connected to the "Surround", not "Surround Back" speaker terminals. That should take care of it.

+1 Repete said what I was going to say.
I am also a proud owner of this receiver, and I love it!

I have the HTR-6080 (RX-V861), which is the previous model to the RX-V863. Using HDMI keep your PS3 set to linear PCM. I assume you ran the auto setup using the YPAO system and mic? You'll need to do that in order to have your speaker configuration set properly in the 663's memory.

Most soundtracks are 5.1, so the default for the 663 is to play it straight through, meaning a 7.1 system won't have the rear surround activated. In order to activate them, go into the 663's menu screen, select the Sound Menu, go to E) Extended Surround, and choose Dolby Pro Logic IIx (if you're system is 7.1) or Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES if you're running a 6.1 system. This will matrix the surround channels in a 5.1 ch soundtrack to fill the rear surrounds of your system.

Enabling that will keep all your speakers working when the source soundtrack is 5.1 or 6.1. It's detailed beginning on page 80 of your instruction manual.

Okay, I understand that setting it up for DPL IIx will matrix the surround to 7.1 but what about Dolby True HD and true 7.1 channel surround processing straight from the studio master? I think the problem is my source, not my hardware. There apparently are very few "true" Dolby True HD blu-rays out there. The Spirit is one, but I have to say I am very disappointed in the sound....may as well be 5.1. After looking at my blu-rays more closely last night, I see that many movies have Dolby un-True HD because it is 5.1. What gives? We already have an audio standard for 5.1, its called Dolby Digital. Why would the studios label a blu-ray disk Dolby True HD/DTS HD-MA when there are only 5.1 channels? I am speaking the following movies: Ironman, The Dark Knight, and Spiderman III...yes a bit of a comic movie buff I know. I now I'm ranting, but I feel a little bit mislead with this whole 7.1/hd audio business. Can anyone recommend movies that sound great and are true 7.1 or do I simply deal with matrix encoding for the time being? Thank you all for the posts, the help was definitely appreciated, but the studios need to get on board.....btw tried the dpl IIx with Dark Knight and have ps3 set to pcm and still only have 5.1 channels lighting up, no sound from rear surrounds. I did run the YPAO but I am checking p 80 in the manual now.

Dolby TrueHD is a codec used which allows for the presentation of a lossless audio soundtrack. Sometimes this soundtrack is in 5.1 and sometimes it's in 7.1. The sound quality will be the same no matter how many speakers are in use. It ultimately depends on how the soundtrack is recorded.

Only the newest movies are mixed in 7.1 surround sound. Searching on Google I found a pretty cool site called blu-raystats.com. You can sort by 7.1 audio, among other criteria.

Okay, but shouldn't I still be able to matrix a Dolby True Hd blu-ray with a 5.1 soundtrack and get 7.1 channels of audio? I set my receiver for DPL IIx and still only get 5.1 channels.

Yes, you should be able to do this. If you can't, you've miswired or misconfigured something.
