Default PS3 and Yamaha v663

I still am clueless. Do I want bitstream or Linear PCM?

When I select all options for linear pcm I get a warning about speaker damage?

Can someone please give me settings advice. My best understanding is that I want bitstream but I am not sure anymore

There are numerous threads about this but here goes:

For a PS3, it can't bitstream HD codecs. So, set it to Linear PCM.

Also, and this is very important, make sure to select all options under audio output except for AAC. Then you should get all types of surround coming through your system.

Hope that helps.

Ok I did that. I'm not sure if it's my center speaker that just sucks but it sounds like it's got too much midrange and not enough high end. The fronts and surround speakers sound rediculous. I can hear so many little noises that I've never heard before so I'm guessing it's my center channel (it's a bose).

Man don't tell me I need a new center speaker now too..lol
more new toys? My wife is going to KILL me!!!!!!!

I'll do some searching on settings. Sorry to repost.

So I've tried just about everything and I just can't get the center channel to sound nice. It just sounds like it's all mid range. That leaves me to ask my next question.

If my center channel is just a weak speaker, would that cause the mid-range sound? Wouldn't it still produce some sort of high? Why did it sound good before with my other receiver?

If I bought a new center channel, would I be more likely to get high end? To me I would think the sound is from the signal but what can I do to improve that? I tried the crossover but I honestly don't know what frequency should be highs and lows.

See if your front speakers have a matching center available. That's your best choice. If not, you could try the phantom center approach or you could audition some other center channel speakers to see what you like best.

My fronts are also the bose cubes and I have the longer bose center so they should be matching. Like I said, they sounded fine together on my previous setup.

You're going to be missing a lot with those cubes period. You should go for the phantom center approach until you're ready to upgrade your speakers. Bose cube speakers have awfully high crossover levels so when possible, upgrade.

I'm happy with the cubes, it's the center that is not making me happy.

Does using the YPAO make a difference? Meaning would I get a better sound result by using or not using?

I would say yes to using the YPAO. It will also tell you if your front is out of phase etc. and adjust the sound level to the left and right

YPAO will definitely help out, because it will help calibrate your system to get the most out of your speakers. It will help set speaker distances, size, tonal qualities and level. I use YPAO and then fine tune things further with a dB SPL meter I picked up from Radio Shack.

YPAO will help, but it can't overcome limitations or shortcomings in the speakers themselves. Good receivers like the 663 can reveal a level of detail that lesser receivers or TV speakers will not. At the same time, they can also reveal limitations in speakers, which sounds like the case with your center channel. I'm guessing that your left and right channels have a more extended frequency range than your center channel. That is why it now sounds like too much mid bass is coming from the center channel. Most vocals resonate from mid-bass drivers, and that may have been an area of emphasis for Bose on that center channel speaker. With Bose cubes on the other hand, they tend to focus on the treble frequencies while leaving much of the mid frequency range out entirely.

I would suggest that your next upgrade consists of timbre matched speakers for your front channels. Not knowing your budget I would suggest auditioning speakers from Monitor Audio's Bronze line, like the BR2s, or similar speakers from Paradigm, Klipsch, or Polk. I prefer the Monitor Audios, because they have fantastic sound and build quality for the price.

try searching on craigslist if you'd like, to get a matching center channel. or as driver king mentioned, use a 'phantom channel' with your fronts instead, using your recievers setting with NO for your center channel setup.

I ran the YPAO and it made a great difference. After the setup, I was watching Batman Begins and was not overly impressed. This was also the movie I was testing last night. Everything sounded hollow in a way. Like an echo was slightly present.

I switched to Casino Royale and there was a noticeable difference. I was very pleased. I then tried out die hard and it was good but still, I'm not sure if I like it. I almost want to go to the movies to hear what it should sound like.

Maybe I am just so use to crap sound that now that it's better I'm looking for crap. LOL

I did check out a klipsch center channel and was thinking about buying but I don't want to mess with tone issues.

Turn the Dynamic Range Control off on both your PS3 and the Receiver.

Unfortunately, your speakers are Bose. If you go into the speaker discussion there is a sticky thread that talks about Bose speakers. Your center channel probably does not have a tweeter which is why you are not getting any high end. In fact, all of your speakers will not get high end because with the cubes they do not separate mid-range from hi. I hope this helps. Your best bet is saving your money and in time buying separates and start off by buying new fronts and a center channel.

Also, Batman Begins has a pretty poor soundtrack. So that might have been why that did not sound that great.

Good Luck.

In addition to the DRC setting noted by ALLIANCE68, check your sound settings on the 663 (see manual pgs 48-52). Are you using one of the sound fields? That would introduce echo. Try setting it to Straight and see if there's a difference.

BACsader. I Bet you have your DRC on, if Batman sounded bad.

DRC was off everywhere. That was one of the first things I turned off on the PS3.

Then check your sound fields as joggy suggested.

hey man, I am experiencing the exact same problem with my new set-up. Speakers sound great but there is way to much bass coming out of the centre channel even if i turn the treble way up and the bass way down. I have even set my front speaker levels way down so they are not overpowering my centre. I'm running an energy system with the yamaha 663 receiver. my centre is this one

http://www.energy-speakers.com/na-en...pecifications/

I have the receiver set to surround decoder and have turned the drc off on the ps3 and receiver. I never got the little mic with my receiver because it was a floor model. There are settings on the receiver for each individual speakers like that have decibals for highs and lows and stuff but I'm afraid to touch it because I don't know what I'm doing.

also i should mention I have all my speakers set to small , and at 8 ohms.

I thought you can't change sound fields with DD? What should I be checking? As far as I know I was listening to "straight"
