edit - because otherwise it just sounds like you're saying that a certain artist has too many fans which, well, doesn't actually make sense.
Variable, you are making alot of sense. Considering his entire body of work, you can do much worse than QT. I haven't seen the Grindhouse films, and didn't love From Dusk Til Dawn, but on the whole I find his style refreshing and his story telling skilled.

He is a good director and has made some classic films. But because he bases his style of movie making on old B movies it can be an double edged sword sometimes.

Such as Jackie Brown for example. Though in these less than spectacular films there is at least some sort of vision which deserves credit.

Honestly, he is over rated. He had a couple cult hits in the beginning of his career, now all the fanboys think he is God. I liked Pulp Fiction, that was his only stand out movie IMHO. Resvior Dogs was good but a once and done. The segement in Four Rooms was overated and ok at best. Kill Bill 1 & 2 were good nothing great. Jacki Brown was terrible and Death Proof is easily one of the worst movies ever made, MSKT 3000 style

Kill Bill 1 was one of the best movies of the decade and most ppl would agree with that.

Say what you want about Tarantino (I personally don't care for him). But you have to admit...he does have a face you just wanna punch!?!

How so? There really is no great acting or story telling there. Just pure action. The Kill Bills are nothing but a popcorn action flick that was hyped by fanboys. Kill Bills were fun, but no where near great. You cannot put them in the same league as The Godfather, LOTR, Shawshank, etc

The Kill Bill flicks are homage to the old Kung Fu flicks of the past with a little bit of other things thrown in. There's a little Takashi Miike, a little Italian Spagetti Western, it's actually Tarantinos love song to the cinema he loves.

Some times you can see where a director has been influenced by another, QT is not that subtle and his work wreaks of blatant theft.

I am not a "hater" because its cool or trendy. I sat in the theater shaking my head at the garbage that is Pulp Fiction on opening weekend.

He isnt awful behind the camera, but his storytelling abilities are crap, at best.
yep

Yes it's a mishmash of all different types of cinema and well executed. Truly a work of modern art if you ask me.

Part two is the slower 70's style revenge movie. Part 1 is the Kung Fu Shaw Bros. revenge movie fused with Japanese cinema. The Tea House fight is pure Asian shock blended with kung fu action and a little wire fu.

It's a good movie on it's own but a ****ing brilliant film if you know about the source materials he used as inspiration.

All of his films are, in some way or form, set in cinema stereotypes but the execution is top notch. Like how Pulp Fiction centers around the MacGuffin. Jackie Brown based on a Blacksploitation flick. Resivoir Dogs a typical group heist flick with typical betrayals. The execution of them however, defines Tarantino as a director.

Inglorius Bastards is going to be his group war flick.

I've been thinking the same thing (that he's overrated) for a few years now as well. It actually broke my heart when I reached that conclusion because I was such a fan and still am of those things that he did that I like. True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, the screenplay for Natural Born Killers... all truly great. I even enjoyed Jackie Brown though it wasn't one of his finest. I did have a thing for Bridget Fonda in those days. The recent stuff though really hasn't impressed me at all. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The Kill Bills I have at a 3 out of 5 stars, and Death Proof I have 2 out of five. They may be paying homage to cinema that he likes but that's now three homage movies. Time for some new material Quentin. Inglorious Bastards is a remake of an old Italian movie. It probably won't be terrible either but there is a marked difference between Quentin being on his game, and mailing one in which these homage films seem to be. I pin the start of the decline at Jackie Brown so this makes 4 just okay films in a row. Being okay when the reputation is that large (and deserved, I don't want to insult the guy by trivializing his great original stuff) is the definition of overrated.

see, none of that sounds cool or interesting to me at all. in fact it sounds even more boring than kill bill 2. i wasn't old enough to see the kinds of films that tarantino grew up. but even still i doubt that i would anyway. they sound extremely boring to me.

you're not alone

how far american cinema has descended . every time i try to watch a tarantino film im reminded of how culturally bankrupt this nation has become.

Gone are the sweeping scripts, character development and sheer brillance of the golden years of Hollywood

So what have we got to replace Billy Wilder? Samuel Jackson pointing a gun to to someone's head calling him mother f***cka

I don't see how paying Homage to films he grew up on makes him a brilliant director. That is like some that grew up in the ninties pay homage to LOTR lol. Being brilliant is a originality.

You see what I did there? It's called opinions, which seem to not be allowed on the internet.

But it is the cool thing to hate Tarantino, Lucas, and Speilberg now. The internet has a love-hate relationship with all three.

i've never got him. Never watched resevoir dogs or pulp fiction completly. Just couldn't hold my interest. Also didn't care much for Kill Bill. The fight scense were great but the story jsut didn't pull me in.

I know i am in the monrity, but i think he si highly overated. HE sure is different, but I jsut don't care for his tastes.

Pulp Fiction used to be my favorite of his, but I wanted to show my girlfriend Reservoir Dogs so we watched it a couple of weeks ago, and I changed my mind - I think Reservoir Dogs is his best movie. It is flippin' amazing. The acting and dialogue are just so on point.
