Hello,
I am new to surround sound and was going to set up an entire new system. I just bought the samsung 52 inch lcd tv and the samsung bdp2500 blue ray player. now i am thinking about the sound was as i did not want to spend too much money was looking at the ONKYO hts-7100 system. The question i had was will the AV reciever and the speakers play the 7.1 sound comming form the blue ray. In short does the ONKYO system output audio via HDMI 1.3 or does it require a optical cable. Also will the reciever play the sound coming from the TV via the same HDMI cable or do i need some other cable Thanks and any other sugguestions are welcome Thank you |

I bought the Onkyo 7100 system. I have been very happy with it. The 7100 is 7.1 capable, and can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. However, you have to make sure your blu-ray player can bitstream these two codecs to the receiver. Otherwise, your receiver needs to be able to decode them itself, and send it as LPCM output. Also realize, not all source is 7.1. Some is 5.1, and this receiver can matrix the 5.1 source into 7.1. I'm not quite sure what you are asking when you want to know if the Onkyo system output audio via HDMI 1.3 or if it requires an optical cable. I think maybe what you're asking is if you can send audio to the Onkyo receiver via HDMI or if it has to be put over an optical cable. Yes, this receiver is capable of HDMI repeating, so you can get audio via the HDMI cable. Now, to get sound from your TV, I'm guessing you have your coax cable hooked straight up to your TV? If so, you will probably need an optical audio cable to connect from your optical audio out port on your tv to one of the optical audio ports on your receiver. This is how I did it before I got Verizon FiOS and had a set-top box w/ an HDMI port. I just had the coax cable hooked up to my TV, and sent the audio to the receiver via the optical audio port. Hope this helps you out. |

if your player has bitsream the 7100 will decode for Dolby HD and DTS-MA. The PS3 decodes it itself and sends it through LPCM which is basically the same thing.... so yes the 7100 will decode the blu's as long as your player is set to bitstream... oh and go with 9100 if your budget allows... it will make you do this --->
