Its really an amazing film, it does not insult the pro wrestling business at all. Mickey was really great in it!

If your not a wrestling fan you will still love it.

I saw it the other day, and while it was good, it didn't quite live up to the expectations I had going in.

Rourke was good, but I often wondered if that was good acting, or him just being himself. Definitely deserves a nomination for Best Actor, but I'm not sure he stands out as an obvious winner.

The story itself was pretty run-of-the-mill. You can pretty much predict the entire story from the very beginning, and I don't think the ideas of dating a stripper or having an estranged relationship with your kid is anything new.

That being said, the movie isn't about surprising you with the story, and instead just takes you along for the ride. It was still an enjoyable movie, and one of the better I've seen this year, but certainly not Aronofsky's best, and it could have been better.

Edit: Oh, and Springsteen's song at the end definitely deserves the Oscar for Best Song.

Just watched this. I was hooked quickly because of the amazingly accurate portrayal of the wrestling world (helps that I'm right now reading Bret Hart's book and he introduces loads of lingo) and also because they used some real wrestlers and venues from the Jersey area where it took place.

once that was over, the drama brought me in. great performances and story. Can't help but root for the guy.

Damn fine film.

Really nails the vibe of the underground wrestling scene. I saw that Sabu and Dory Funk Jr. were advisers on the film and it shows. The wrestling and the real world scenes are all very raw, realistic, and believable. As a fan of old school wrestling and the early ECW stuff this movie really delivers. So sad what happens to alot of these guys. All the deaths and murders and drug abuse. Sad.
Rourke was great and i loved the fact that about half of the movie is just the camera following behind him as he goes through all his menial tasks for the day.

Annoying how? I've heard several posters complain about the ending, but they don't elaborate.

Have you seen the movie? Because if you haven't yet, maybe you don't want people to share more about the ending.

I didn't really have a problem with it, other than I thought it was a cheap ending, but it kind of worked.

My biggest problem with the movie is that it's not really that original. In an interview, the guy who wrote the movie (whoever he is) said that Aronofsky gave him a copy of Beyond the Mat to watch, to get an idea on writing a movie.

So then is it a big surprise that most of the movie is basically based on Jake the Snake in Beyond the Mat? Fairly big-name wrestling star of the 80s, today is a nobody, had a bad relationship with his daughter (hadn't seen her in a long time, until meeting up with her in the documentary), had a drug problem, etc.

Rourke still should get credit for his acting job, and, even though it's not his best work, Aronofsky should get credit for actually getting the movie made with barely any money.

Yes, i saw the movie. No, it's not the most original movie ever, but geez, not every idea can be groundbreaking. The execution of that idea is another matter, and i think Aronofsky executed this movie perfectly. It's got the perfect vibe and the low-fi/no budget dynamic really works for this type of movie. The only people who are gonna know about Beyond the Mat and all that stuff are gonna be pretty hardcore wrestling fans anyways, and those people are gonna be thrilled with the way this movie was done. I just don't see joe six-pack complaining because this movie was too much like Beyond the Mat.

mentioned this in other threads, but I thought it was the best film of 2008, and I saw pretty much everything being mentioned for best of w/ the exception of Slumdog Millionaire, which I will see within the next week or so.
It surpassed my expectations, and thought some scenes were funny, especially the one where the Ram is in a no-holds barred match and the guy takes the fork to his face..being an old-school wrestling fan from the 80's, I giggled myself silly, and thought it was pure bliss!..will be buying this on BD for sure

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. I'm not complaining that it's too much like Beyond the Mat. Instead I'm just saying I hope the writer doesn't get too much credit for writing a "great" movie, when he really didn't have to do too much.

Sure, writing dialogue can be a bit tricky (so I've heard), but Ram doesn't talk much, so that solves that problem. Plus, I could be wrong, but I think Rourke improvised most of his lines, using the script only as a sort of guide.

Rourke pretty much is the entire movie. Aronofsky did well, but it's certainly not his best work.

The Wrestler finally opened up in Orlando today, I had the pleasure of not having class so I got to go see it. It was- ehhh... It was good, I can see the draw, I'm a HUGE Aronofsky fan, but it was missing that special "something"

Now I am wondering if spectacular acting can make a decent movie an oscar nod.

If the answer is yes, then I'm wondering if a decent script can make TERRIBLE acting (Gran Torino) an oscar nod.

hmm...
