Still no news or updates on the supposed German remaster. At this rate I might as well just hope that it gets a UHD release at some point and they finally get the aspect ratio right.

Finally! Looks like a Mediabook in 2 cover art choices, both limited. Unfortunately, cover A has the floating heads version of the classic poster, instead of just the ship. There's some discussion of it on this site:

Not sure what's new, but it seems they will be fixing the aspect ratio for starters. I'm wondering how the image quality will look. I was almost hoping for a US UHD release, as that would also hopefully solve the aspect ratio issues, but I guess that's wishful thinking.

So far no pre-order available. I'm not sure who will be seeling them or what the price will be. Probably fairly expensive since it's a mediabook.

Yeah, it's around $45 US with shipping if it's €30. Too much for me sadly. I'd love to own it since I refused to buy the US release due to the aspect ratio issue, but $45 is just too much, considering any new extras will likely be in German, including the booklet, so I wouldn't even be able to read it. I hope Arrow or somebody gets this remaster.

The reason I'm not importing this is:

A) Even though it's supposedly remastered, there's virtually no difference in image quality between this and the old transfer, other than some very slight color and brightness differences.

B) No new extras

C) Cost is just too expensive for me to consider importing (well over $40 with shipping)

Now, if Arrow (or Shout) got this, and threw something new in for extras, I'd grab it for a more reasonable price. It's great to see the aspect ratio fixed, and I never bought this on blu-ray due to this issue, but I was expecting a more substantial picture upgrade.

Unfortunately, the aspect ratio is out of whack.

Still a ratty old transfer with sharpening up the yin-yang. An easy pass for me.

Not a remaster, unfortunately. Gonna pass. I'll wait for an actual remaster, with proper colors (less dullness and magenta, more greens), without sharpening, with fixed aspect ratio.

Except it is not the proper ratio since it is now closer to 2.54:1 as opposed to 2.39:1.

It's got to be closer than the US disc since the stretching has been alleviated.

I'm baffled there are still people who expect German releases of genre studio titles to be 'remastered'. In this case the German label probably meant they remastered the existing transfer by stretching it back to normal.These German releases are aimed at German collectors who expect a German dub track and like the packaging to reflect the VHS era. For such a release, the limited edition status and the marked up price is a joke.

Unless they actually remastered it properly with a new 2K or 4K scan, or managed to find the excess gore material (I'm not convinced these are actual deleted scenes more like remeved inserts) this release is something you'd expect to find as an affordable Amazon.de release.
