Hi all,
Finally fully in my HD world, and I'm trying to maximize my sound! I have a nice, Denon AVR-588 which luckily had HDMI inputs, I bought it because my poor old Denon that I spent about 3x as much on kicked it at the 6 year mark. Now, here I sit. I want to be able to enjoy my HDMI audio formats, and I'm not sure where to go. I spent under $400 on my receiver, and I want to do the same in this situation. It doesn't need to be "denon quality" but I don't want to downgrade from the sound quality that I have with my 588. I really want to go cheap as possible to enjoy good quality sound on my decent, slightly older Energy Encore speakers. I was looking at this: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...099881&catid=# Are there any other options from the Canucks in the forums? Any thoughts, greatly appreciated!! ![]() Nick |

If your looking for under $400cdn I would look into either the yamaha 6140, pioneer 918, or the sony 720. All of those will handle multi-channel pcm through hdmi.

Agree with others in this post. You might have to step up the budget a bit.
Am a Canuk and FS always has sales going on. Especially right now with Super Bowl in another week. They'll be putting lots on sale. Keep watching the OnLine Web specials. The Yamaha 6180 last week was $599, now I see it's back up to $989, crazy stuff. The Harmon Kardon receivers are always coming on sale too. The receiver in your post has a couple of draw backs I see. Does not decode the newest codecs (True HD and DTS-HD). It does not upconvert analogue signals to 1080p only HDMI. If you are using a PS3 for BD playback, just set it to LPCM and it will decode for you. Pipe the HDMI into the receiver and you'll be all set! Or do what I just did. Walk into a FS and buy a demo unit. I picked up the VSX1018 Pioneer when every store showed them as not available. I realize it's being replaced, by the 1019. But for me, it was a sweet deal. cwh |
