Universal Studios Universal MOD Releases

I couldn't find a thread keeping track of all the recent Universal MOD releases, so I figured I would make one. A lot of these are not announced and seem to just pop up so let me know if I have left anything out.

These are NOT BD-R releases. They are pressed Blu-ray discs a la Warner Archive.

2020 RELEASES:

2019 RELEASES:

2017-18 RELEASES:

Great idea, I'm glad you created it because I didn't realize until now that Zoot Suit was coming out.

Make sure you check the site review for PQ before ordering any of these.

Some have been very good, like Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and Fletch Lives.

Others not so much, The Wedding Date only got a 1.5 PQ, so I’m holding onto my DVD.

THANKS to the OP for starting this thread. And YES, these have ALL been pressed discs.

Good to see they are pressed. I can understand when small indie labels like SRS use BD-R, but for a company of Universals size there is no excuse to do BD-R like Sony does. Small runs of pressed MOD are much more respectful to the film for a major studio.

Except it's not about respect, it's about profit margins. Hollywood is a business first and foremost.

It's a pity that while Universal owns the Paramount catalog, they aren't using this format to release some of the great movies they own.

This Gun For Hire
The Blue Dahlia
The Glass Key
Two Years Before the Mast
Lucky Jordan

And those are just Alan Ladd films.

What's up Universal???

That's a bit of an overstatement. They own ~20 years of the Paramount catalog, mostly of an era not quick to get Blu-ray releases.

Those first three in that list would make a great set!

Unfortunately, that's the 20 year era that I'm most interested in.

Seasons Three and Four of 12 Monkeys appear to be coming from this line.

Man on the Moon is my biggest Universal want. I’d rather see it as a Shout Select title, between the true Andy Kaufman story and the crazy production there’s a lot of potential to add substantial extras to what was originally released on DVD, they could possibly even clear that Netflix doc, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d be happy to see Universal releasing it as one of these no-frills MOD titles.

Is it just me or do the subtitles on all these MOD releases have a yellow tint?

I have Problem Child 1 (retail release), Problem Child 2 (MOD release) & K-9 (MOD release) & I noticed this yellow tint on the subtitles on the MOD releases. Compared it to Problem Child 1 & those are clean white.

Not a big issue for me but I was just wondering.

I see you posted the 5 new titles for Nov 6 in the OP. Good catch.

It's quite amazing to me that now Universal wants to release the original "The Producers", after they previously leased it out to Shout Factory. The SF release got a 4.5 PQ and 4.0 AQ. PLUS a 4.0 for Extras. Predicting the new Uni disc will have -0- extras.

Ooooppppps. That’s my bad. It’s the Producers remake by Uni. Hard pass.
Nothing to see here...

MGM licensed out the 1968 version to SF and Universal is releasing the 2005 (remake) version.

From Universal I'm really really hoping for Biloxi Blues....thought Brodrick and Walken were excellent in that movie....Heart And Souls....before Downey became iron Man....such a terrific film!!! Career Opportunities....another underrated gem that needs a Blu! Whaley and Connelly were great..

The sixties comedy Bedtime Story (1964) would be a good choice for this series, it stars Marlon Brando & David Niven, & I don't think it's even had a DVD release. It was remade as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) with Steve Martin & Michael Caine, which is very good, but I prefer the original.

The only one of these I've gotten so far is the Skulls. The video quality was very very average. The cover insert was so poorly printed I could barely make out the text on the back. Was really excited for this release but it was a bit of a let down in the end. Either way, there are definitely a bunch more I want from this line. They just seem to be pricey in Canada and the quality of the Skulls has turned me off ordering them for now.

I got Fletch Lives and didn't have any issues with it. Looked as expected, insert and case are fine. Will buy Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and maybe a couple others someday.

Are their any practical differences besides limited availability and higher pricing between these and a regular Universal catalog title?

No digital copies or DVDs. I'm assuming no slipcovers. VERY poorly printed cover art. Much harder to find.

Only one of these I have so far is Won't You Be My Neighbor. Hoping for Bean but holding out on better pricing or an eBay copy.

My wish list for Universal Blu-rays:

- Fierce Creatures (haven't yet pulled the trigger on the UK Fabulous Films release)
- Splitting Heirs
- Kissing A Fool
- Opportunity Knocks
- Housesitter (hopefully with Frank Oz commentary but not holding my breath on an MOD release)
- The Matchmaker
- Man on the Moon
- Bird on a Wire

My Fletch Lives looks about the same as a Warner Archive release. Obviously not as good as a normal release, but fine enough.
