Default School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win

DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.

Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."

The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."

In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."

Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."

At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."

Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.

"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."
I laughed but I feel bad for the opposing team, losing that bad would make me want to quit the game

Your post to the thread is pointless.

PS. On topic

Why should they feel bad the other team sucked and they blew them out?

It is why I like teams like USC, who are not afraid to run up the score

If the other team sucks, then thats there problem.

i agree with you there, theres too much "its gotta be fair, what about the losing kids self esteem?" stuff in sports now, thats what sports are, competition to see which team or individual is better at a certain event, not to make everybody feel good about themselves. when i was a teenager, i played on a hockey team that was really good, we played in really competitive tournaments and leagues, and rather than buy rink time by ourselves for practices in the summer, we signed up for a few house leagues, but decided that was a bad idea when we were beating teams by 20-30 goals and got kicked out of two of them because nobody was having fun, sorry, but not everybody can win, and we werent being jerks about it, just playing our game and working on different things

it's called sportsmanship. esp. in high school. against, what sounds like a team made up of girls wanting to play the game and nothing more.

i don't know where u were raised or went to school, but in my school and in the conference we were a part of, sportsmanship was the 1st thing expected from players, fans, coaches, and the schools involved.

even the "good" teams had sportsmanship regardless of any rivalry. one team rocked @ football but sucked @ basketball. so you can gloat for one sport season but expect to be humbled the next.

people like the coach on the winning team is worthless in my opinion, what are you proving when you do something like this???

your comments on USC are valid to a point only b/c that's a business and there is some serious money to be made by that program for that school. but in high school, there is no point to what this coach did.

i do agree w/your post. the last thing i want to see is these parents holding the hands of kids when they don't get their way.

when my kids are old enough, and if they have an interest in sports, i won't expect them to be on the team if there are other kids that are better than them. sounds mean but it's teaching them self value.

everyone needs to experience winning and losing, but not on this scale. this got to the point of embarassing the other team, that is not competition.

I don't know, it seems like a big "F.U." to the other team. Kind of a "We beat you so bad, that the only way for you to win is for us to give it to you, so here you are."

Yes sportsman ship is good

But if scoring so much more than the other team is so wrong, then why bother even keeping score , just do it like was done when I was a kid in school and was playing sports. Aww you guys lost, but here is a trophy anway. Get whooped, is a good lesson for teams so they can see on what they need to improve on.

But in Highschool there is. Becuase many highschool atheleets want to play college sports. and if they want to do that, then Getting whooped up on in high school is not that big of a deal.becuase its probably going to happen to them in there College/professional carrere.

So the other team was just to walk out on the game halfway through to avoid some embarassment for the other team?

When I watched USC whoop Uva like 62 to 7. I didnt cry about it, and Nither did Uva.

Im glad they did it, Holes in the teams defense and offense were exposed, for improvements to be made

A good whooping/embarassment is good every now and again

plus it should motivate you to do better next time

From what I read, the school that scored 0 points was a small school of 20 girls, who all have learning disabilities.

College football isn't a good comparison, because the score factors into the BCS rankings. In many professional sports, it is generally frowned upon to run up the score.

this i don't agree with except when u've got the little kids and it's their 1st experience w/competition. but once u're old enough to know about winning & losing, this should stop.

this next comment is gonna sound bad, i in no way am trying to offend anyone.......as far as beating up on a high school team when it's obvious that one team is better than the other, it's kind of like being the smartest kid in the "special" class. how smart are you really when compared to the rest???

it's really no comparison. it would be like taking a high school football team from Div. 6 and pitting them against a pro team. u know who'd gonna win, why subject people to it though???

that is what back ups are for. take the starters out and give the back ups some playing time.

there is a team in my area that has won the last 6 state championships in football. these kids don't know what losing is. over the last 6 years, the team has lost 2x.

even this team knows enough to take the starters out when the win is a lock.

and believe me, we got beat pretty bad at times too, and it is necessary to learn that you are not always going to win at everything, but you cant hold back players from showing their potential at a high school or similar level of play, a lot of these kids are looking to show what they can do so maybe they can get seen and get a scholarship for college, and if they arent allowed to play to their abilities, how are they supposed to showcase all of their skills? i dont know about the schools in this case, i am just talking in generalities about sports in general

Thats what I think, they should have put in the 3rd string to make the game more a game.

I saw a article similar to this during HS football season where the team won like 112 - 0, and they too felt bad about winning by such a margin.

trust me, i was on the wrong end of some pretty lop sided games in high school. and i didn't cry about it.

i'm just saying, how good is an individual against a team like this??

imagine, u've got a player that can play for a div. 1 college and will get a scholarship. u've got a team that hasn't won in the last 3 years. how good is that player gonna look against a team like this??

it would be more impressive if a team can take on a legitimate opponent and win like this.

i just don't see how playing like this can make anyone look good.

as a competitor, i can see how exciting that'd be to shut somebody out. but at 59-0 at halftime i would feel like the message was sent and accomplished. no need to keep the pressure and the 3's on
