I loved this film, and I heavily related to it, despite being in 8th grade almost a decade ago. It’s a very awkward film, but intentionally so, and it’s an excellent window into teen life today. It has a lot of deep meaning too. Might pick it up at some point.

I only got to see it twice in theatres, wish I could have seen it more. One of the year's best.

my friend really didn't like it since it somewhat mirrored what his niece was going through in middle and Sr. High school but to a much worse degree. I on the other hand thought it was flat out excellent, it kind of came across as a film Todd Solondz would have made of the today's modern age of teenagers, social media and just general awkwardness (it was like 'Dear Evan Hanson' minus the death of one of the central characters). I'd definitely watch this again. I hope the home video edition has some decent supplement material.

K-12 is such a joke today with so much kids have to do along with so many restrictions. There's also that new thing about everyone is so overly sensitive. I wouldn't want to be growing up today. Watching parts of this just made me shake my head so many times. I've seen how horrid growing up today is for kids first hand, yuck.

what floors me, is how dependent, more so with teenagers and young adults they've become glued to their phones, and social media in general, and how it can be a hindering to one's self esteem ~ I'm glad when I was a teenager I didn't have to deal with that sh*t.

I do have to say, it's the first movie that while shot in an actual school, with real students and teachers, the realism and multi-racial diversity showed how Hollywood is so out of touch in depicting 'fictional' schools in movies and TV is so stereotypical and cliched.

Skipped this one since I hated my eighth grade year. I'm glad social media didn't exist then.

Interesting look at a generation raised on cell phones and social media. One of the best films I saw all year, and easy day 1 purchase.

Interesting how that all happened overnight. When I was in high school I don't recall anyone with a cell phone unless it was built into their car. If you wanted to take a girl out, you'd have to call the family landline and awkwardly ask to speak to the daughter if someone else picked up the phone. But by college it seemed like everyone had their own cell phone.

I've been a Bo Burhnam fan since his days of being a Youtube musical comedian and I'm so glad he got the opportunity to write and direct this. Finally got to catch this at the theater yesterday and it is really an amazing movie. Really runs you through a gamut of emotions.

It's impressive for Bo (a 28 year old male) to be able to nail the issues facing the younger generation (and in this case, the opposite gender) so well, but it sort of makes sense considering he was putting himself out there on youtube as a teen. So much of the modern teen's self-worth comes from social media, and it is such a toxic way to grow up.

France just banned phones in schools, and I truly believe the US needs to follow suit - this movie really reinforced that feeling to me. I did find it funny how the original script had the kids interacting on facebook, until the main actress (who at the time was in 8th grade) pointed out to Bo that they all communicate with snapchat and IG. And then Bo put the "no one uses facebook" line into the movie.

Blu-ray preordered.

I think this is the first film that actually tries to show us WHY teenagers are on their smartphones so much instead of mocking them for it, even if it still kinda pokes fun at it. When I was in eighth grade (2008-09), very few kids had smartphones (most still had flip phones and/or iPods if they had anything), but internet culture was still a thing, and smartphones were ubiquitous when I was at the end of high school just five years ago. I even had a little-seen YouTube channel all through HS just like Kayla. Our school gave us laptops, but I don’t think they do that anymore. They don’t need to. Even in five years, a bit has changed. Kids seem to post more on Instagram and SnapChat than Facebook and even Twitter. I didn’t know anyone that cared about Twitter (still don’t, actually), Instagram was only for the very social media-savvy people, and SnapChat was brand new.

I agree with this, but it doesn't mean that those reasons aren't potentially damaging and shaping the world view of an entire generation. I'm just trying to imagine hiring one of these kids, if they sit on their smart phones all day at school, how are they going to adjust to the workforce when they don't have this constant stimulation? For the record, I'm 30 and use my smartphone quite a bit. But I try to minimize the social-media aspect of it as much as possible.

Its pretty fascinating subject-matter and this movie is quite though provoking.

My eighth grade year can go straight to Hell.

...and that was almost 33 years ago. Haha.

I remember one particular triumphant moment, though...

During a ride home on the school bus a couple of hours after the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, where seven astronauts lost their lives, I overheard a guy behind me, a guy who had been bullying me for the entire year, complain, We’re all going to have to pay for that space shuttle with our taxes now.”
I stood up, turned around, looked right at the guy, and told him, “You’re the biggest f*****g piece of s**t on the planet. You know that, don’t you?”
Everybody around us on the bus laughed.
He threw a couple of punches my way later on, but it was worth it.

Anyway, I’ll probably check out this Blu-ray to see how the plight of present-day kids compares to my own all those decades ago.

I want to see this. And I am looking forward to seeing a depiction of kids today that isn't done through the lens of "IN MY DAY KIDS INTERACTED IN THE REAL WORLD! DAMN KIDS TODAY ARE THE DEATH OF CIVILIZATION!!!" like every single generation has said about the generation below them for the entire history of civilization. I kind of have that reaction myself, but I'm getting up there in years (cell phones were owned by like 1/3 of my high school population and smart phones didn't become a thing until after I graduated from college).

8th grade a decade ago? You’re still a baby! Try 26 years ago for me & thanks for making me feel old. Anyway I went to a private school so 8th grade was a blast & didn’t have to deal with cell phones or social media garbage. I honestly feel sorry for kids today.
