How long do they really last, can i replace the bulb myself, can i buy the blub someplace? I really should wait til the tv i have dies but i"m on the fence. Can anyone help? keim kong! |

Older units required a tech do replalce the bulb. The newer units are modules that you simply unscrew, pull out the unit and slide a new unit in. So it can be done at home by yourself. Some bulbs cost more than others. I have heard for Mistubishi they runas low as 100 dollars and i have heard some cost as much as 200-400 dollars. Some after market warranties cover the bulbs. I have read some horror stories where bulbs are out of stuck and people have had to wait months to get one. So you may want to keep a spare bulb as a backup in case yours goes just in case your bulb for your TV is on backorder. The other alternative is to go with LED DLP. Samsung makes these. There is no bulb in it. It uses LED's as the lgiht source. and the LED are supposed to have about 40-60 thousand hours which i think equates to around 7-10 years of normal use. They also will auto adjust the power to the LED over time as the dim. SO they basicallyt have a self checking mechanism in them to ensur ethat they output the same amount of light form the LED over time. As with any TV there are issues with Samsungs LED TV. I have one and had alot of issue which eventually samsung did get fixed. SOme other users have had theirs replaced several times, with no luck and dropped samsung TV altogther. The orginal Samsung LED models had quite a few problems with them which seemed to have been addressed/fixed now. But I do like the fact i never have to pay to have to replace a bulb in the unit which is why i went with the LED model. I actually was goign to buy the samsung DLP bulb model,,bought the stand and was about to buy a bulb model when they annoucned the LED models. So I had a nice tv stand for almost a year sitting there without a TV cause i wanted to wait for the LED model. Although others will tell you Samsung LED models are junk. If you get one that is working or has a problem that gets fixed by samsung and does work. IT is a very nice picture and you get the most size and bang for your buck. Mistubishi is also coming out with a bulbless model. It uses a laser and is supposed to be on par or better than the Kuro Plasma which is supposed to be the best HDTV out there. Only issue with that is it si going to cost around 7 thousand dollars so it is out of the reach of most peoples budget. But again no bulb to replace. You can do a google search fo the samsung model if you want to find out more review on it and costs. hl67a750 for the 67 inch model - I have seen this one sold for around 1500-200 grand hl61a750 for the 61 inch model- This one i have seen as cheap as 1100 grand Last edited by slaizer2000; 01-27-2009 at 06:14 PM. |

The post above is pretty on point. I had a Samsung DLP for a while with a bulb. I had it for about 2 1/2 years and the bulb definately decreases in brightness. They cost around $200 for a new one. If it were me, id go for the LED DLP and ive heard that Mitsubishi DLP's are the way to go...

there also has been some rumors that sammy will be releasing a newer led dlp model this spring/summer. But no info on what changes if any they will make.
The DLP chip in the unti is a Texas Insturment (TI) chip. Its a verison 3 chip. TI came out with a DarkChip4 (DC4) DLP chip. This chip is supposed to have 40% more color gammut and is used in the newer Mitsubishi models. So you may want to wait till after the newer models from sammy come out if they do. They would be more,,,but at the same time the price on the current 3rd generation models would be lower as well. So you could decide if the higher price on the newer models would be worth the higer cost. |

Slaizer pretty much hit everything with his explanation....hes right about the newer models replacing the bulb is as easy as unscrewing a few (2 in my case) screws and sliding in the new one in....mine lasted almost two years so it really depends on the usuage....if you don't think its worth the spending about 200 bucks everytime the bulb goes out, you might want to look at some other tech....but they are getting cheaper and at really good sizes...

I find the lamp based DLP's give better detail in the blacks over the other. Just keep a spare lamp or two on hand. Never know when it could burn out, pop or crack but keep it well ventilated and NEVER shut it down without allowing the fan to cool it. To avoid a power failure cooking the lamp, keep it plugged into a UPS of some kind. That way you'll know when the power dies in the house (lamps or indirect lighting along walls) and you can power down the projo the right way.

The LED models are supposed to have 40% more gamut than the bulb models. This may mainly be in the colors (r/g/b) as opposed to black though. |

I get them from:
http://www.mitsuparts.com/ Enter model # and viola....if you want cheaper alternative there are third party by googling, but careful cause some will try to sell you the bulb by itself, i was going to do that until i noticed that the housing (where the bulb rests) doesn't open and i have to get the bulb and housing assembled...so be sure to check what type of housing on the model your are interested in uses...also the link i gave you is from mitsubishi so they'll sell you the whole thing assemble... Don't count on any new DLP models from Samsung. At CES they announced the current sets would be the last ones made.
Bulbs with the housing run $150 from Samsung parts. You can just buy the bulb and put it into your existing housing for about $100. |

I thought the value of the Samsung HL61A750 was so fantastic I just purchased one! (I gave my old HLN617 to my son.) The store I purchased it from (Crutchfield) is sold out but Amazon still has some units at a great price.
