Two different people reviewed the discs on this site. I think this is the first time I've seen separate reviews for the HDR10 and Dolby Vision versions of a UHD. Looks like the reviews were done by different people and they gave the BDs a different score. But yeah, to add to the confusion Reuben gave different scores to the BD in his reviews.

Watched THE MEG didnt care for it. Looked and sounded great
Btw anyone else notice lately the smudge marks on discs and I know I never put my prints on them but they seem to come that way brand new like someone is just touching them during the process sometime? It played fine but was kid of annoying since I am going to sell off my copy. Anyhow listed my steelbook on the selling forum. |

Watched the UHD last night. The contrast is way overblown (it's whacked - there is so much clipping it's just silly).
If you adjust the contrast (white level) down so that whites start to show detail again (all white skies now show clouds and blue areas), lighting on faces look proper, etc, the picture is marvelous. Very weird.... |

The movie itself was pretty much what I expected. It was fair. I thought the attempt at humor was horrible whenever they tried - pretty cheesy dialogue throughout. |

My copy can't come soon enough.
Not because I'm that desperate in watching it again (saw it in Imax 3D, thought the movie was aight). But with all these comments about the picture being overblown, washed out and too bright, I'm very curious to see how this looks on UHD. |

Some insight into The Meg. This movie's metadata state that MaxCLL is around 1800 when in reality it is closer to 4400. So any display that is using the metadata to tone map will end up with obvious clipping/contrast issues. The frame average on this is one of the highest I've ever seen too, so trying to compress it down will result in issues as well. This title would be served better by displays that ignore the metadata altogether. Even something like the Panasonic UB820 would have issues with this one because it uses the MaxCLL for its tone map, and in this case it is wrong (another recent example of this is Rampage).
If you have a way to make the display ignore the metadata I would suggest that and setup the display to optimize for about 4000 nits. |

I feel this UHD definitely leans towards DV than HDR10. Already watched it twice, decent entertainment.
first viewing I forgot to flip on DV on my uhd player half way through, and the daytime above-water scenes were pretty overblown: just one massive white space in the background devouring any detail, could barely see the silhouette of the clouds from the sky. Then I switched DV on, and the advantage of scene-by-scene tonal mapping immediately came to help, hence I watched it one more time, I quite enjoyed it. Overall, I think the "HDR is cryons" guys are going to have a feast with this one ![]() |

I rented the BD and ended up buying a three-pack with Deep Blue Sea, Snakes on a Plane and The Long Kiss Goodnight instead. Have only seen the first two and I already know I made the right decision.
Bingbing Li, the tons of money obviously wasted on set design and effects and finally the end credits Hey Mickey cover (in Thai?) were The Meg's only redeeming qualities. ![]() |

I thought Samsungs mapped to whichever is highest out of MaxMDL or MaxCLL? My telly ignores HDR10 metadata anyway so as I said before: challenge accepted - though not before I can buy this for a price better suited to the schlock therein

I wouldn't do a sad. If this has been mastered to 4000/0.005 for the display-level metadata then you'll be fine because - this is if I'm correct, I ain't no Samsung expert - the TV will defer to the higher 4000-nit mastering level (MDL) metadata rather than the 1800-odd MaxCLL that Kris is reporting it has, and as the actual peak brightness of the content is a wee bit over 4000 nits then your TV mapping the 4000-nit 'container' is doing the same job.
