I will definitely go along with that. My connection is a very good one and it requires a lot of trouble to go to that length plus the heavy file sizes. Besides I am one of those who likes the optical media in my hand rather then a file on a computer.

I'm rocking dial up so any kind of streaming is out of the question at 2-12 bytes a second. Blu forever. That's my HD and I think it would be wrong on many different levels to make downloads the norm. Highspeed is unavailable to us in my area. Even with satellite they don't recommend their internet where I live.

I have streaming capabilities at my house with netflix and the 360 but I have little interest in buying movies only in digital form.
It is great for rentals though, even though it doesn't match the quality. |

Not sure how a projection so far off into the future could be accurate ?

By 2017, no movie studio will be releasing anything on DVD anymore. The DVD format will be dead by then.
The DVD format is already in a state of decline. The growing popularity of Blu-ray is now beginning to accelerate that trend -just like what DVD did to movies sold on VHS. The migration from SD TV to HDTV will also help accelerate that trend even more. HD video on broadcast, cable or satellite TV is inferior to Blu-ray -but it is very noticeably superior to DVD. Much sooner than 2017 -try around the end of 2010 or 2011, retail stores won't be carrying movie playback hardware that plays only DVD. By then, any DVD players in stores will be Blu-ray players that happen to also play DVDs. By the end of 2009 we'll start seeing $99 Blu-ray players. Once BD hardware reaches those price levels any new DVD hardware will no longer have any relevance in the market anymore. |

I remember the reaction to the Back To The Future releases that where coming to DVD. No one relay cared cause they knew only with Blu-Ray is there going to be something new and worth buying. The only stumbling block is price. Sales figures have shown certain titles will be bought at premium and some won't. It's up the studios now to start getting prices below $20 and im sure with the way things are going it will happen. All in all by 2017 DVD will be long dead buried. |

I don't think it will be that long, there's the "trend" phenomenon that will have a big impact, when the sales become 40% Blu/60% DVD, people will consider it's mainstream (and the prices will have dropped a lot) so the sales will become mad and the 80% will be attained fast ... question is when will the 40% be attained (I'd say Xmas 2010)

It's really hard to make a prediction like that. I consider 50% is when a new tech has successfully replaced an old tech. I will guess around 2011 for that to happen.
I think most of us knew here that Blu-ray was here to stay. Many journalists were in denial about it. The facts are that there is a noticeable difference between SD and HD even for normal non-techphile people. Most people trying to make others believe otherwise (ie, upscaling is good enough) have some vendetta against HDTV or Blu-ray. Also, did they really think everyone was going to have 3+ Terabytes of HDD space, high speed internet access, a wired connection to the living room box, and all the companies promoting DD to come up with a common ground solution on DRM, etc? I see a great future for DD in the rental market, including VOD. Nothing beyond that. |
