By 2017, no movie studio will be releasing anything on DVD anymore. The DVD format will be dead by then.

The DVD format is already in a state of decline. The growing popularity of Blu-ray is now beginning to accelerate that trend -just like what DVD did to movies sold on VHS. The migration from SD TV to HDTV will also help accelerate that trend even more. HD video on broadcast, cable or satellite TV is inferior to Blu-ray -but it is very noticeably superior to DVD.

Much sooner than 2017 -try around the end of 2010 or 2011, retail stores won't be carrying movie playback hardware that plays only DVD. By then, any DVD players in stores will be Blu-ray players that happen to also play DVDs. By the end of 2009 we'll start seeing $99 Blu-ray players. Once BD hardware reaches those price levels any new DVD hardware will no longer have any relevance in the market anymore.
