Oh goodness yes. Aside from what people have posted about fond memories, better packaging and the like my two key caveats are exclusive features and transfer differences-most specifically on the audio side of things as it's the most common reason for me to have multiple copies.
Firstly for films I truly like I like to hold onto old editions with features that haven't carried over-or for exclusive presentations etc. Some older releases have transfer differences: more correct color, non digitally tweaked masters, better grain retention etc. But primarily why I have so many multiples today-and more specifically Laserdisc editions of films-is due to the incessant remixing of audio tracks that really took off in the DVD era and continues to happen combined with the lack of interest in preserving original audio mixes with proper quality. I cannot even begin to list how many times I've been shocked at how much better an older release can sound regardless of source mix or format, and now if there's any nice older release Laserdisc of a title I like with a digital soundtrack, I usually add it to my lddb wishlist. I'll admit to also buying many LDs that are identical to their DVD ports simply to check out the PCM track versus the lossy DD track or 5.1 remix. But then again I'm the nut who has been collecting every major Bond format release short of CED and Beta. |

I honestly find it amazing people still shop for movies in a store in 2019. |

I usually INTEND to get rid of my duplicate DVDs, but they're so worthless at this point I feel insulted taking them to a record store to get 10 cents each. Sometimes I'll ship out a stack to friends, but otherwise, I have around a hundred just sitting in plastic tubs, waiting for their fate.

sadly the lack of retail space for new releases (or stock items) is a big part of why physical media is dying. can't trell you how many times i went to a store to buy a specific title and ended up coming home with titles that i hadn't even considered. there is much to be said about impulse buying. i really don't have that online. i order what i want and maybe look at a recommendation or two but that's about it. |

I only save the DVD in the rare instance that any major extras are missing on the upgrade, like a full documentary for example. I need the space, and nostalgia isn't enough to have me keep them - besides, I still have them, in a better version! I've been lucky enough to be able to upgrade to a great 4K tv and most DVDs show their age unfortunately. |

I still love the tactile pleasure of going to a store and riffing through a stack of movies, CDs or books, hoping something will catch my eye I wasn't even thinking of before I got there.
![]() Plus, you can "kick the tires" of the purchase to ensure getting copies with a pristine slipcover, no dinged corners or spine slashes on a steelbook, etc. When ordering online, you're totally at the mercy of whoever packages, ships and delivers your goodies. ![]() |

I used to ask my wife if anyone from her work would like something out of my "take it to the disc exchange place someday" pile, but she laughed so hard every time I stopped asking. To her and the girls she works with the idea of owning a movie is preposterous. Same for my students.

It really IS bizarre how the paradigm has shifted over the last two decades. In the salad days of the DVD format (roughly 1999-2002, I'd say), there was TREMENDOUS excitement about actually being able to amass a sizeable movie collection in a format much better and more convenient than bulky, smeary VHS. Pretty much EVERYONE was buying a DVD player, and a classic movie hitting this new format was an EVENT. Now people are just content to stream everything, and have zero interest in any movie made prior to the early-2000s.

I've got a store near my house that buys my DVDs for $3-$4 a pop depending on the title, so not too bad - I figure I got years of enjoyment out of them and if I can put that money toward new discs even better. |

I sell the dvds if I can get a decent profit for them. I normally list like 40 to 100 dvds and blu rays on craiglist at a price thats equal to the utility I put on that item plus 30% to 50% mark up or market value minus 5 to 15% whichever is higher.
