Default PS3 hard drive Question

If i need extra space can i use an external hard drive plugged into the usb slot? Or do i have to replace the existing hard drive with a larger one?
Thanks

You can use an external hard drive to store
or back saved data utility, music, photos, and
some videos but the game data utility stays on the
PS3 hard drive

can i just ask what's the point in upgrading to a bigger HD?
I downloaded demos, play them and then delete them, samewith videos (even though i ussually dont dl them, i just watch on my pc) So i'm just curious as to what everyone is doing with a bigger hard drive? Is there downloadable movies like xbox360 or something i'm missing

well when you install a game, it takes space. i think. so if you use up all your space, then delete a game(not demo) from your hardrive and decide you wanna play it again, you have to reinstall it. i have the 60gb and used most of it, im actually looking into upgrading to a bigger hard drive. and i heard its easy, can anyone confirm?

Movies, game videos, demos, game installs, game saves, etc. It can add up if you use it enough, but you can delete game installs if you are never going to play the game again. It really depends on what you use it for.

Replacing the drive wont void ur warranty. That info is in the manual. You'll just have to put back the original if you claim warranty. That info i got from the sony rep when i had my ps3 fixed back in october.

If you go to sony.com and look up that information. It even says there that replacing the hardrive with another one WILL NOT void the warranty. You'll just have to put it back in if you need to send it in is all.

So this process is fairly easy? I will have to do this soon.

Anyway, this thread made me wonder what happened to the sticky thread of what to do when upgrading your HDD. I thought it was very helpful.

changing out the hard drive does not void any warranty, and it is so easy to do that i have never done it myself, but i walked my brother in law through his HDD switch over the phone.

and for those who don't know... if you buy a movie from the PSN store, you can't re-download it, as it doesn't show up in your download list in the transaction stuff.

also, they do'nt even come in surround sound.

I just swapped out the oringinal 60g HDD from my launch unit and replaced it with a WD Scorpio 320g HD. I think the whole process took less than 20 minutes.....very very easy. Here is a link to a how-to on the forum:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=37467

As an aside, I'm looking to buy a case for my old HD....does anyone know off-hand if I can restore the system from the original HD once I do this? I know some proprietary content will need to be re-downloaded, but will this work for everything else?

Thanks in advance!

You are fine. Just use a USB memory stick and just copy the Saved Game files for your Backup by manually selecting them. Sure you'll have to reinstall/download all of your games, but at least you won't lose anything permanent.
