They all "deserved" the Oscar, but Stallone's personal story plus the emotionally rousing nature of the movie helped Rocky win more votes than the brutal self-aware cynicism of Network or the disturbing look into the psyche of a would-be Presidential assassin.

Rocky was great and it was definately the sentimental choice but Taxi Driver was the better movie, no contest.
