Default Pirates 3 VS Battlestar

Title says it all...

HD DVD has announced the opponent to Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on December 4th: Battlestar Galactica Season 1 (6 discs)

What do you all think?

Who's likely to prevail?

My guess... no Cylon horde can prevail against Captain Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl!! (No matter how good a TV series it is! - and it is good!)

This won't even be close. Galactica is a cult following at best. POTC 3 has done hundreds of millions worldwide.

Personally..I'd rather have Battlestar. That is one of a very few handful of titles I really want to own.

Battlestar was one of the reasons I waited on getting a Blu-Ray. And it has much more than a cult following. Have you ever checked out some of the home videos on the Sci Fi website? Hopefully Universal will come to their collective senses and go Blu.....

I wouldn't under rate Battlestar. It also gives hope to other Sci Fi series as well in the (near) future. I dont think BD has anything like this out yet.

I'm with Spankey. I would really love to own this series in hi-def over POTC:AWE.

It would almost be worth it to me to buy a $199.00 HD-DVD player just to have this series.

Must...not...give...in...
Wait...for...blu...wait...for...blu...

you guys must be joking when you say Battlestar will outsell Pirates. seriously. im waiting for the JUST KIDDING!!! battlestar IS a cult following, if you dont think so, then you probably like it and you ARE IN THE CULT. for example, i am in the air force, which is the nerd branch of the military, and im also in avionics, which is where one of the highest concentration of nerds gather. only 2 of the 25+ people i work with like the show and roughly 10 have even heard of it. and guess what? those 2 dont even own an HD-DVD player! im not saying its a bad show, i would probably like it, just havent had time to watch it lately. but to even doubt, in the smallest way, that Pirates, a BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE, will not beat the living hell out of their "opponent" on Dec. 4th is ludicrous. check the top grossing movies. Pirates 1-3 are all in the top 10. badabing badaboom bettyboop.

I'd like to own battlestar as well, but face it, countering POTC-3? I personally don't think it is up to the task.

So what if they attempt to counter POTC... that still leaves the SM trillogy to steamroll them.

in the real world (outside of here) I only know 2 people who watch battlestar. but almost everyone I know went to see potc:awe. I wanted to get into battlestar but I just couldn't, I would definetly put it under cult following.

now firefly/serenity, there's one I hope for everyday I have serenity on my hd dvr.

Buckshot, now you shootin' w/ both barrels! I've already talked about my rating system as far as BR desirability, and Firefly/Serenity is SQUARELY in the I-will-push-over-old-women-and-children-to-get-that-copy-on-release-day column. But i would agree that show is as much (if not more than) a cult show as BS (tho for a "cult" movie serenity *did* gros a respectable amt.)

I'm not saying it will sell better than POTC:ATWE. I know there is no way in HELL. The POTC series is, by far, one of the most popular, wide-spread, franchises out there and I will buy the boxed set myself when it hits shores.

But, for me personally, I would rather have Battlestar Galactica in hi-def. The writers on this series have pulled no punches. Best sci-fi TV show ever. Hell, I'll go so far as to say it's the best sci-fi franchise ever! I'd take BSG over a new Star Wars movie any day! Frakkin' A!

The Matrix part deux: A catalog box set versus a new release.

Where is this announcement?

Ironically, Firefly (the series) is Fox.

I would love to have Battlestar Galactica Season 1 (6 discs) in my media rack. This really sucks! Pirates 3 over Battlestar I would honestly go with Battlestar in a second.

Not so much, it played on Fox, but I believe universal owns it... thats why it was playing on UHD - "Universal High Def" on both Dish and Directv

I'd have to say that as much of a following as Battlestar might have, there is no way any sane group would think that it could come close to matching POTC numbers.

Then again I guess anyone clinging to HD DUD thinking it might last, let alone thinking it might win the format war isn't all that sane.

The question I have to ask is since I'm fairly new and don't have the other POTC movies on blu-ray, is do I pick up worlds end to enjoy it when it comes out, or do I wait for whatever special edition boxed set that they will roll out with all of them?

I would love BSG on Blu-ray because I love the show, but also because it's shot with hidef cameras. I remember the behind the scenes feature on my buddies dvd said something about needing to put wax paper over the lens to make things look less fake in HD(as HD camera's reveal the plastic or rubbery look of certain sets & props).
Having said that, Pirates has so many people into it that I really can't see BSG really being a threat to it and BD. And then there's also the fact that Pirates will cost a fraction on an entire season of BSG. I know, apples and oranges, but still...money is also a factor. More people can or will buy POTC because it's one disc to complete their set and only $24-$30 while BSG is goin to be in or near the triple digits, AND it's on the format that physically cannot live up to the best HiDef specs.

My vote is for Pirates, and let's hope this little "Battle" brought to us by Uni will show them just how poor a decision they have made. Not to mention we have Smallville and Lost on the way too.

Battlestar is pretty much my favorite TV show ever.... this is horrible. Erg...

I think I can hold off for a year or two.... but... this is the most tempting thing Universal has put up yet.
