Based on this PS3 number, Sony is selling approximately 400k PS3 per month. Sony said it sold 4.58 millions by 6/30. So the total PS3 sold by now should be around 5.2 millions. The number should be accelerated greatly in the coming two months with the releasing of 30+ PS3 games and 60+ Blu-ray movies.

Woohoo!

The industry needs to get firmly behind one format. No room for two.

As much as I love Blu-ray and know that it is a truely better format than H-DUD i wonder if we would be fighting a losing battle if it were not for PS3. Either way here's to PS3 bringing in Blu-ray as the winner.

I agree. The PS3 has helped to make the format war a shorter war than it could've been.

According to that chart. The Wii will pass the Xbox 360 in total sales this week. Hooray!!! Now we just need the PS3 to do the same.

Not bad for an "overpriced trojan horse"

Jim Lynch of ExtremeTech can simply get stuffed

I think there's no doubt of that. If not for the PS3, HD-DVD would have a very strong shot at total victory. The current software numbers would likely still favor HD-DVD. Warner and Paramount likely wouldn't have gone neutral. And nobody would be predicting the end of the format war by Q1/08.

You gotta hand it to Sony... including Blu-ray in the PS3 worked out about as well as they possibly could have hoped.

Default Ds?

What the heck is up with the DS? I really don't get the appeal of it, although of course I haven't tried it.

I'm not convinced that HD-DVD would be winning without the PS3. The fact is that the PS3 has muddied up the waters.

How many people who own PS3s do so simply because it is Blu-Ray? If the PS3 did not exist, everyone of those people would own a standalone Blu-Ray player.

This is my biggest problem with HD-DVDers trying to make things look good for themselves. They include all PS3 sales when it suits. They ignore all PS3 sales when it suits. Both are useless in the discussion, what matters is the number of owners who would actually use Blu-Ray. Nobody has those statistics. A good start really would be to look at just how many people bought the PS3 blu-ray remote.

I own a DS for very simple reasons: there's a lot of good games on it. It proves, much like the GBA, that old-skool style 2-D ain't dead.

I own a PS3 right now (since Jan 1st) because of the Blu-ray drive. I planned on getting a PS3 for GTAIV and FFXIII eventually, but the Blu-ray dive is what made me get it so early compared to when I was going to get it. I would not own a stand alone player if the Blu-ray drive was left out of the PS3. Honestly, I would probably have an HD-DVD player because I can get anything Toshiba at cost. THANK GOD SONY INCLUDED THE BLU-RAY DRIVE!!!

sony would have those stats, when first signing up for a PSN account i filled out a survey and i'm sure most people did too. one of the questions/check boxes was if you'd use it for BD movies.

but i do agree with you on the remote. until sony releases those actual numbers, we can use PS3 remote sales as a lowball estimate.

until someone finds/reveals BD remote sales we'll just have to go by other surveys, which seem to suggest 20% of PS3s were used for HD movies. (don't ask for link, i don't remember)

Stby guys, when Halo 3 comes out for Xbox 360 expect a big sales jump for Microsoft...PS3 has no title to match this one - at least until Unreal Tournament III is released.

If this is already known here forgive me, but VG charts is not accurate and does not represent real sales numbers.

I'm a big fan of the DS, lots of great games for it such as Castlevania.

Wow! thats great. xbox 360 had a price drop in the US and we still beat them worldwide. Halo 3 is going to give them a kick in the rear, but over the past month or so, ps3 has outsold the 360 by over 100k worldwide, by the time halo 3 comes out its going to be up to 150k worldwide. I don't think that Halo 3 is going to sell THAT many consoles, as a lot of 360 owners have been funneled into the system by MSs cutting off of the orignal xbox.

Using a sports analogy, if you look at just about any NBA championship team you can say, "If they didn't have their best player, they probably wouldn't have won the championship." We're seeing much the same tactic from some HD DVD fans. If they lose they'll be able to point to the PS3 as one of the major reasons, if not the biggest reason. But it will still be a loss. Kind of like if one NBA team owner was more committed to winning and brought in a top player, while the other teams owner didn't, but got somebody who was good, but would only play part time. Kind of like Sony with the PS3 committing to including Blu-ray as standard and Microsoft only going with the optional HD DVD add-on for the XBOX360.

Haze?

I don't expect a big sales jump for Microsoft because of Halo 3. I expect one because the holidays are coming up. Halo 3 will only be part of it.

Mainly, because everybody I know who wants Halo 3 already bought a 360 for Gears of War. Sure I don't know everybody, but I also don't believe that Halo 3 is going to sell a million consoles for Microsoft the first week like some want to believe.
