My girlfriend called me to say she saw this awesome Bose system for $2,500! I just about flipped when she asked me if she should get it! I told her definately NO, NO, NO, under any circumstance! I said I would ask you guys and that I'd get back to her with a system that'll be much, much better and will last longer.
Here's the thing.....they have to be Satellite Speakers as she doesn't have the room for Floorstanders and/or bookshelves even. Her family room is of an odd configuration and not conducive to anything else but a Satellite system. The receiver can be either 5.1 or 7.1, although she'll likely never go the 7.1 route. No room for anything but a receiver, so no seperates, ok? She already has the Samsung BDP-1500 Blu-ray player and a Panasonic (model ?)1080p plasma. I'll be doing my own research and taking her for auditions, but I'd welcome your suggestions (hopefully based on personal experience). John |

Well, for sattelites, I know that Definitive Tech make some excellent speakers. B&W also makes some very nice wall mounting speakers that are quite attractive as well. Take a look around. When I listened to Def Techs sattelites, I found them extremely bright and almost unbearable to listen to. That could have just been because it was at Best Buy. For that money, I would like to think the B&W will be very good.

There is the Energy RC Mini Satellites, they sell them at futureshop. I personally haven't heard them, but you can go and tested them out. As for receiver, the Denon 6180 is on sale and it goes for $699 right now.

Check out Monitor Audio's Radius lineup. The R225HD is somewhat large, but shallow and wall-mountable, and would be very nice for the L/R/C. If they're too big, the R180HD is smaller. Then she can get the R90HD mini monitors for surrounds, or the R180HD if she has room. They're available on Audiogon brand-new from Saturday Audio Exchange for pretty good prices: $300 EACH for the 225, $170 EACH for the 180, and $300/pair for the 90.
So at the most you're looking at $1240 for a 5.0 setup with three 225s across the front and two 180s in the rear; or $850 for 180s all around; $810 for 180s across the front and 90s for the rears; or $770 for a 180 center channel and 90s for the rest. Lots of possible combinations, depending on how much space she has. Are in-walls a possibility? And does she have room for a sub? |

Also check out the Revel Concerta series--they introduced a system in that series that is designed to hang on the walls. The M10's for fronts, C10 center, and M8's for surrounds. Or you could sub in the bipole/dipole S12's. As always, if the M10 or C10 is too big, the M8's could be used all around. But I would trust the quality of that system, coming from Revel--I'm not sure on price however.

I have 5 of the B&W M-1s in my bedroom.... no sub. I think they were $225 each when I got them, and I don't think they've gone up since then (because I purchased them AFTER the latest price hike) I'd say they're worth auditioning, but I also hear good things about the gallos, but haven't listened to them. Is she in a place where in-walls are an option? She may not even realize the potential for that is there...... Or do you want to have her move in and put that $2,500 towards a new sub for yourself? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just came home for a quick lunch, so I don't have time right now to reply individually. I will tonight though.
However, to answer a few basic questions. In-walls might be possible and I'll bring it up to her. How does their quality (keeping things relative) compare to Satellites? I suspect that a little larger than traditionally-sized satellites is a possibility as well. Regarding a sub...yes, I think she would want (if not need) one for that extra oomph , as I don't think Satellites can deliver what Floorstanders or even bookshelf speakers can. Thanks so far for the suggestions and I'll see you guys later tonight! ![]() John |
