Jon Favreau to direct The Avengers?

This is pure rumor at this point, but what a great rumor it is. A new source claiming to be from inside Marvel has recently spoken up to leak all sorts of news about what's happening with the development of their superhero movies, including the fact that Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau is the presumptive director for The Avengers.

The Avengers is delayed a year because of financing issues but also because the plan is for Favreau to helm it. Everybody here loves the guy and he wants to do it, but it would have been impossible for him to do before the date change given his Iron Man 2 commitments. Also partly the reason why he agreed to do the Stark sequel on such an accelerated schedule was so he could get given first dibs on this. It would still be a punishing schedule for him, so hes not firmly confirmed yet, but he is certainly the presumptive director at this point.

Favreau has proven he can handle superhero material, and handle it well. IMO, his directing would help solidify a great Avengers movie.

Who are they getting to act for each character? That seems like it'll be a VERY large budget to do.

Have they decided on a story line yet?

this movie will probably have a ridiculous budget, you're right. from what i've heard no story has been settled on yet. i can't even remember if they have announced a screenwriter(s) yet

That's the thing that concerns me about a JLA film or a Avengers film is casting. Can you cast no names and be just as successful as in the big budget comic book films that focus on one character but with A - list actors and actresses?

It seems like they'll have to, because otherwise, they'd end up with an astronomical budget just on casting A - list actors and actresses unless they take a HUGE pay cut, which I don't really see happening.

yeah, not sure how but i didn't even consider how much it would cost to cast a famous ensemble cast i don't think it is possible for a movie like that to be as successful with no names, especially if the roles have concurrently already been set by more popular actors in their own individual movies.

I'm afraid that they'll do that and it will flop big time.

I mean I understand JLA is stuck in pre production right now, but look at who is rumored to be casted according to IMDB.

The only ones that I recognize are Adam Brody and Santiago Cabrera. And I mean Adam Brody for the Flash? Hmm. Doesn't quite fit to me and he's not really A-list himself, but I'm afraid too that audiences would largely consist of teenage girls if they throw him in and not to comic book fans like you and me.

It also seems like they are trying to include a wide range of ethnic groups in casting in the JLA film for each hero which is interesting, but not quite sure what to make of that.

If they were smart, they would include The Avengers in the contracts with the stars for their stand-alone movies (Hulk, Iron Man, Nick Fury, etc.). We saw Downey cameo as Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk, saw Samuel Jackson cameo as Nick Fury in Iron Man, the Avengers contract may have already been signed when Jackson, Norton, and Downey signed up for Nick Fury, Iron Man, and Hulk. That's a long shot, but not outside the realm of possibility.

A cameo is entirely different than a major role. But the studio was DEFINITELY smart in Samuel L. Jackson's contract. If they did that with everybody like you say, then we'd definitely have no problem seeing A-list actors and actresses reprise their roles as the Marvel heroes.

Farveau did an excellent job on Iron Man so I would definitely be down with him directing the Avengers.

We already know that Samuel L Jackson is cast. Downey Jr has already talked about it but I doubt he's officially cast. He might be, but don't look for any official cast announcements for some time.

Marvel's plan is to bring the original actors from the solo movies together for the Avengers. They'll probably have set paychecks for all the actors and then have a back end percentage deal for those that are bigger names.

Why not? The two Ocean sequels cost $85 million. Look at that cast.

We obviously don't know who Cap is yet. The current name for Thor is Alexander Skarsgård who isn't going to be too expensive. I would imagine the pay is going to be set int the contracts for both Thor and Cap when the perspective actors sign. Then you have Ed Norton if they can get him. His price isn't that steep, he's not A-list (Look at the gross of his past movies). Downey Jr is the biggest name and his contract might already be written.

Paychecks for actors have gone down (at least on the front end) and some actors actually care about their characters and their longevity (for future work).

Sure, I think it's very possible. With a good director, decent writing and all that, a very good movie can happen.

Also, some celebs might be willing to take a pay-cut the first time around since it seems that the "in" thing to do is to be a superhero these days.

Either way, a sequel would definitely call for some huge paychecks if the first one is wildly successful.

I think he will be directing as that's who they wanted all along. Pretty much confirms it since they pushed the release back so that will give him time to do it.

I think that Marvel is trying to build a budget to get some of the big name actors that is already cast in some of their existing movies. I can't imagine the Avengers without Downey Jr. There are 2 movies with him in it involving a team. I hope Marvel does cast him. He is Tony Stark. Only way they wouldn't need him is if they only show Iron Man, but I don't think they would do that for the first movie.

You add the salary for the actors and then you add the special effects. It adds up.

I didn't say the film wouldn't be good. What I said was that it will probably flop at the box office with no name actors or actresses.
